Hello from a Queenslander

Hi there.

I'm very new to sailing, but have been around power boats (4.5-5.5m range) since getting my boat licence in 1986. I love the ocean but am looking for a quieter way to get around, and also hoping to explore Moreton and Hervey Bays, before venturing further afield as my competency increases (and as my wife has more confidence in me).

I thought i'd start my adventure off with a tidy little 30-35 footer, around the $40k (Aus) mark.

regards.

Jonathan.

Re: Hello from a Queenslander

Welcome!!

You’ve got a pretty good area to work on your sailing and boat handling in Moreton Bay. The channels and flats and islands limit your courses so tacking and gybing lots is what it takes to sail, especially if you can’t just sit and wait for a favourable wind direction.

Where do you think you’ll keep your boat - finding a berth isn’t all that easy unless you can take over the one the boat you buy is in.

Moreton Bay and the Bay Islands has lots of places to explore but unfortunately a limited number of protected anchorages when you’ve got a keel under you. You’ve got protected waterways all the way down to the Gold Coast.

Hervey Bay is a bit different as you’ve got open ocean and a potentially dangerous bar to cross before you can get into the Sandy Straits. Another area of brown water cruising with tight channels before the relatively open waters of Harvey Bay. But once you’re there then Bundaberg and the Bunker Group beckon.
