pirate Hello from Hong Kong

Hi all,

Another newbie just get on board to say hello to all. This forum is amazing! ---Resourceful!

Always dreaming about sailing the world and make my life a bit meaningful by exploring this planet as much as I can before I die.
I am living and working in HK for many years. I was born in China where leisure boating and sailing is still unpopular and under underdeveloped nowadays.
Hong Kong has better environment though in terms of facilities, administration, used boat market and number of enthusiasts; however it still cannot compare with the US and Europe.
I got the HK operator certificate (grade 2) in 2018 and finished ASA101 subsequently.
Now I am thinking seriously to finish ASA102 to ASA105 in a row later in 2021/2022.
Used sailboats and berths here are so more expensive than in the US and and Europe. But anyway I will manage to get my own boat, which will be my first boat. I will start looking maybe later next year.
Is anyone looking for a used sailboat in HK as well, or any tips about getting a good/safe mooring in Hong Kong? I would like to know you and maybe we could meet and share some information.

Thanks!

Re: Hello from Hong Kong

Welcome aboard John! I have fond memories of crewing on a boat that we delivered to Hong Kong back in '81! In those days you could see junks sailing back and forth with the whole family and lots of animals onboard, along with the hydrofoils jetting out to Macau.

Re: Hello from Hong Kong

Welcome.

I would suggest updating your profile with your general location and your boat make & model or “Looking” in the "Boat" category. This info shows up under your UserName in every post in the web view. Many questions are boat and/or location dependent and having these tidbits under your UserName saves answering those questions repeatedly. If you need help setting up your profile then click on this link: https://www.cruisersforum.com/forums...ml#post3308797

I would happily help more if the link above is not enough.

Hi Don,

'81? unbelievable! I was not even born in 81.... thanks for the reply.
It must be an unforgettable memory for you. I believe HK at that time was so unique with rich oriental culture. Did you take pictures?
There are still many people living on board nowadays. Some are like small houses, barely move, but quite pricy, around US$200k or higher; many expat/pilots like it.
Good to know you! and my salute to an old sailor like you!

Re: Hello from Hong Kong

Hi Adelie,
thanks! Will do!
I am still looking for a boat. there aren't too many options for used sail boats in HK and even harder to find some boats with good price. Hopefully, I can update all the information soon.

John Z one of those Star ferry's would make a great boat. Particularly if you can maintain it with your Octopus card!
Cheers
