Hello from Landlocked NY

Hi all,
We live in landlocked part of upstate NY. The closest body of water is almost 2 hours away from us. We bought our 1st boat this summer (a motorboat) and realized after being on the water that we really want a sailboat. We've also been bit by the bug to live life more and head to the sea. We are working out a plan to minimize everything and move south. We have no sailing experience so I'm hoping to gain a bit of knowledge from researching on this forum and other sites.

Re: Hello from Landlocked NY

Welcome aboard! We also live in upstate NY (in the Catskills) and we opted for a big trailer-sailer. That way we can cruise Maine for a week, then come home. Cruise Cape Cod for a week, come home. That's the sort of thing we can fit into our lives right now, what with our work and the kids' school. We have taken it all up and down the east coast, and once to Miami by trailer, then sailed to the Bahamas.

If you opt for a non-trailerable boat, you'll just have to choose where to leave it, and what areas will be within your normal cruising radius.

Basically, it's all good. You've made the big decision -- to spend more time on the water. Everything after that is just refinement. Good luck!

Welcome to the community. Is your plan to move south to live aboard or move south and have the boat as well? Keep us posted of your adventures.

YES We both desire to move to southern Florida and from there we have different thoughts. I'd like to live aboard and he'd like to live in a house and have a boat. I love working things out with my husband and I know this will be no different...we'll find a happy medium for us both and our daughter.

We have discussed that possibility; getting a smaller sailboat that we can take to the finger lakes and great lakes to start out as we learn to sail. I love your idea of sailing it along the eastern coast too. We could definitely fit that into our lifestyle as we pay off our debt and put some money away. Thanks for some more ideas.
