Hello from Rhode Island

Hello All,

New to the forums, and to full time boating. My wife and I are picking up our "new to us" 1977 Viking 43 DCYM in 3 days and starting a life of extended cruising. At least, well be cruising around New England based out of Rhode Island when not working full time jobs. Planning on being onboard 365 days a year through the Northeast winters and change marinas for the summer/winter seasons. Would love to hear from anyone who winters up here in New England. We are excited for the adventure and cant wait to make the delivery up the coast this week. Just in time to get her ready for the winter. Wish us luck!

Re: Hello from Rhode Island

Welcome aboard cf to you both. Winter will be much nicer with a Wallas diesel heater in the cabin. Subscribe to Good Old Boat magazine and enjoy the boating lifestyle! You can both search the forum archives all Winter and catch up on fixing the small projects. Lots of great and knowledgable folks on this forum who'll be glad to offer advice.

Big fan of RI myself, have property there, and have eaten out across the state. I miss the food when stuck in nj during the Winters. Have a stuffie for me and tell Kenyon's to speed up my order on that johnny cake mix it's cold down here already!

Re: Hello from Rhode Island

Thanks! Sadly the best stuffie/clamcake joint (in my opinoon) Flo's is closed for the winter.

Going to have to make it through this first winter with electric heat sadly. Diesel Hydronic Heat is on my list for next year. Was looking at a Webasto 2010 45k BTU for hydronic heat and to replace the electric water heater.

This winter, hoping to install a composting toilet in one of the heads as there is no possibility of pumpouts during the winter. I don't mind using the marina facilities, but want the option for those late night moments...

Re: Hello from Rhode Island

East Beach Flo's does have the goods! Eat there about 30-40 times during the Spring - Fall lol! Fried clam strips on the deck! Sucks that all my favorites close by Nov 1st up there. Thats what sends me back to jersey for the 'milder' Winters lol! I did commercial clamming for a few years when I was younger and sold to lots of the shacks!

You have a NorEaster coming your way this Saturday Sunday, so batten down the hatches and get yourself warmed up if the power goes out on your dock.

Yes, unfortunately looks like I may be spending an extra night at the marina in CT on the way up since its not looking very good for Saturday. Well see how it looks in a couple days.

Re: Hello from Rhode Island

R1 - there's a thread in the liveaboard section that's called something like "Kingston WInters". I think it may be Kingston, Ontario (if it isn't KIngston, Jamaica) and if so, there might be some helpful tips for you.

Welcome and safe journey back to RI!
