Hi From a Kiwi in Oz

Hi from Jill & Bruce on the Kendall 32 (early Westsail) Daemon.

Daemon is currently in the Brisbane River, where we will be for the next six months while we earn cruising units. We have been out cruising for 2 years now, taking it slowly. We have been to Fiji, New Caledonia, Vanuatu & Chesterfield Reef on our way here, and plan to head up to the north of Vanuatu, Solomon Islands, Papua New Guinea & the Philippines next year.

All the best for a great New Year!

Hi and welcome!! Sounds like a great trip you all had.. I'm very much a noob to boats and such, can you all fill me in what "cruising units" are?? Or is that just slang that I'm not aware of??

Hope you and everyone here on the board had a great christmas and a very safe and excellent new year!!

Cheers!!

Welcome aboard, we hope to be following in your footsteps around May. We are heading for the Barrier for new years eve, unfortunately the Hauraki wind gods are asleep and what wind there is is from the South East so it will be a motorsail or maybe just a motor only trip. I helped sail a Roberts 43 back from Brisbane several years ago I was amazed at the cheapness of the moorings right in the middle of Brisbane, I imagine they are a lot more expensive now if they are there at all.
Wish you a happy and prosperous new year.

Cruising Units & Brisbane Moorings

Hi,
Yup Shadow, Skipr John is right, cruising units are dollars, and lots of 'em, more than you'd imagine you'd need. BTW, boat units are $ spent on your boat. When I was a wee sailing lass, a boat unit = $100. Now inflation seems to have increased it to $1000. Sigh.

And Steve, yes, the moorings are still obscenely cheap, A$50 per week, and for that you get the pile mooring, free hot showers (!), use of the excellent laundry, dinghy access to the Stamford Plaza dinghy dock and a great cruising community, all in the heart of the CBD, next to the Botanic Gardens. However lots of people have become aware of all these upsides and it is getting really hard to get a space as it is full of people who have lived aboard here for years, or locals storing their boats. We were lucky to get one after being anchored for a week (if you sweet-talk the Moorings person, she'll let you have a key to the shower/laundry, and being anchored is free!), that was a month ago, and nothing has come up since.

Look forward to seeing you if you make it up here!

Jill

Hi Jill and Bruce. Be careful of those Ozy's though. Or they will have you sounding like them in next to no time at all ;-)
Keep us all posted with stories of your travels.

Ya theenk so?

Maaate! The thought!

Happy girl today - we just got a "hers" dinghy, as "ours" has taken to deflating rapidly on trips from the piles to the jetty - so, off to get new tubes for it, but in the meantime we needed another to get ashore, so now have a wee inflatable all to myself - the freedom!

Our website Home has all our adventures (and misadventures) for the prurient among you.

Well, off to break out a coldie from the esky & put a bug on the barbie! (and kill the insomniac kookaburra that lives in the park by the boat).

Maaate!
