Howdy from Maine

I moved from Tennessee to Maine last July to start over and jump in feet first to a total change and it has worked out great and I love it, but I've always had something in the back of my mind that I'd love to just ditch most all of society and do my own thing, and since finding land in the highlands of Scotland miles away from anyone else and living off a little farm is impossible, I figure a sailboat is the next best thing, and way more affordable

I live in Bangor and looking around on Marketplace and a few other spots for a good mid 30s sailboat. I'm heading up to Canada this weekend, as I found a guy on FB willing to show me the ropes and learn me a thing or two so I at least halfway know what I'm doing when I make that big purchase.

Re: Howdy from Maine

Matt,

The lure of the sea is a wide spread affliction. Those of us who have had it are not understood by the rest of society. I have been sailing, racing, cruising and now power cruising for sixty seven years. My initial bit of advice is to look to the camaraderie of boating rather than the solitude. Go down to Bucks Harbor and see if you can get a crewing spot on a boat for their summer racing series. You will learn a lot about boats, sailing, racing and you will meet a bunch of really great sea afflicted folks.

I plan on it, assuming the border agent decides to take my driver's license and birth certificate as proof that I exist and live in the US.

I am not sure if DL is still sufficient-it used to be.
Don't forget you have to re-enter USA-so you need "proof" to get back.
Best phone ahead to Can.Customs.
Bangor is head office of US Customs for N.Maine. Check with them on getting back.

Welcome to CruisersForum!

I would suggest updating your profile with your boat make & model or “Looking” in the "Boat" category. This info shows up under your UserName in every post in the web view. Many questions are boat and/or location dependent and having these tidbits under your UserName saves answering those questions repeatedly. If you need help setting up your profile then click on this link: https://www.cruisersforum.com/forums...ml#post3308797

I would happily help more if the link above is not enough.

I would suggest, before you ditch most of society, get a passport in case you decide to crawl of out the ditch sometime in the future.

Re: Howdy from Maine

I live on the border on Michigan and Ontario, and cross regularly. A drivers license is not adequate to cross the US-Canadian border. You must have either a passport, a Nexus card or there is an option to get an enhanced Drivers license that I am not familiar with.

Without one of these the CB Services will not let you in because you will not be able to return to the States.

Good Luck with your search.
