Maybe We're a Little Crazy...

We just bought a sailboat, a 1984 Lancer 27. Our plan is to refit some aspects of the boat to make it more liveable and blue water ready. Would love to meet others living in the Charleston area planning to sail the Caribbean...or passing by on the way to the Caribbean. We may also want to spend some time in The Keys. We were there two years ago on a cruise ship. This should be a much different experience.

So, definitely, if we share some interests or a similar boat, contact us! W're eager to make friends and learn more about the cruising lifestyle.

Re: Maybe we're a little crazy...

Welcome aboard.
My wife and I are getting our boat ready to do extended cruising again, the Caribbean and maybe go around one more time.
Hope you enjoy CF.

I think most cruisers are, indeed, a little crazy. They're way more fun than landlubbers!!!

Hi, I'm in Charleston. Did five months in the Bahamas in '09, and planning to do Bahamas/Eastern Caribbean this coming winter. Where are you keeping your boat?

Thanks for the warm welcome.

The boat is in Cooper River Marina.

We, however, are in Charlotte during the week until we finalize things with the house. We'll be coming down on the weekends. Next definite weekend is April 16. Maybe we can plan to meet for dinner?

I must have missed something...I still can't figure out why you are crazy. It is those that want to stay locked up in their condos and commute to their corporate jobs that are crazy.

Re: Maybe we're a little crazy...

Getting a boat will help there, at least you are starting out with a sound boat. Lots of Lancers 27s up here.

Aloha and welcome aboard!
Get the book "Start Sailing Right!" Even though it is directed at beginning sailors in smaller boats than your 27 you'll learn a lot from it. Also if you get a chance find a club that offers basic sailing lessons. Learning the basics from a good instructor will set you in motion for learning the rest on your own.
kind regards,

Re: Maybe we're a little crazy...

Another helpful book is "The Craft of Sail" by Jan Adkins....if you are totally clueless it is very helpful, if you know how to sail you keep telling yourself "that is why that works". It approaches sailign from the point of view of applied Physics...but don't let that scare you, it only mentions the P word once in the Preface.

Welcome to CF and the crazy (?) world of sailing and cruising.

We used to live in Goose Creek, but are now landlocked in Missouri until we can escape to the sea again.

Re: Maybe we're a little crazy...

Welcome to the forum and sailing in general. You will love it. There should be plenty of ASA sailing classes near you. My advise is to take some. It will be a big advantage to you. I learned by reading and doing, my wife took the 101 and 102 classes and loved them.
