Welcome aboard, Cap'n John. Hope you get the experience you're looking for. You may want to also post in the "Crew Positions" forum. Happy Sailing!

Hello captnjohn,
I have just written an article called "Looking for a Yacht" but from the point-of-view of the sailor who wants to crew for others. It may give you some ideas. Please visit WWW.competentcrew.org for this and other advice about crewing on other peoples boats.

Re: meet and greet

Howdy from beautiful sunny Texas ( sorry to rub it in but we were wearing shorts yesterday)
I crewed on boats all through my twenties, I started out free of charge then slowly began getting paid crew jobs. Your chef experience will be an asset, I'd focus on selling that( my two cents) it is great that both of you cook, you can divide the work load at first while you get a feel for cooking aboard, standing watches and such.
Good luck and Godspeed to your adventures .

Ps.
Be sure to read as much info about picking your yacht to crew on, not all cruising boats are the same. I personally liked family boats ( husband wife team with kids). This usually indicated a well maintained boat with updated safety equipment and thoughtful MOB strategies. Plus they almost always appreciated the help

Re: Meet and Greet

Aloha and welcome aboard!
We occasionally get a little snow up at about the 14,000 foot elevation but never has gotten below 54 degrees down here.
Good luck in finding the right folks to crew with.
kind regards,
