"moin" and hello

Hello everybody,

"moin" is a german wording in the nothern part of Germany which can be said 24 hours a day and means "hello" "good morning" "good day" "good evening" and "good night".

I'm Oliver, 54 and live with my girlfriend Jessica in lower sayony inbetween of Hamburg, Hannover and Bremen. We need about 2 hours by car to arrive our sailing boat "Insane", an old but very stable Phantom 34, in Heiligenhafen at the baltic. For 2022 we want to sail a lot in the baltic, hopefully to Stockholm and fruther north on the east coast of Sweden. After 2022 we will see what can be planed for 2023.

Happy new year
Jessica and Oliver

Re: "moin" and hello

Moin!
I used to live in Hannover and travel to boat in Horumersiel, Wangerland, Wangerooge, Ostfriesische Inseln, North Sea.
Even used to be pretty fluent in German, but haven't spoken any for 15 years
Loved the North sea sailing there - just like my home on the Thames Estuary
Cold in Winter tho!
54! Do you know that you are so old that when you were born, England were world cup holders
(I am of '67 vintage)

Greetings, Jessica and Oliver!

One of my goals in life is to sail the Baltic, having spent so much time on the land there.

Enjoy this forum, with all its personalities, information, and takes so hot they will scorch you like the sun!

Re: "moin" and hello

"Moin" is used all over the Baltic. In Finland, it is the standard word for "hi" (and also "bye"), even among non-sailors -- "moi". Often "moi moi".

Also used in Denmark, Sweden, Poland, Latvia, even Holland (which is not on the Baltic). Kind of a pan-Baltic expression. Etymology is unclear. See: https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moin#Herkunft

So, anyway, moin! I've cruised this part of the Baltic every year but one since 2014. Your cruising grounds are among the most beautiful and interesting in the world. Be sure to not stop at the Stockholm Archipelago -- by all means keep going through the Archipelago Sea, Aaland Islands, South Coast of Finland.

Re: "moin" and hello

Fun fact, mojn (as they spell it here) is also used in the part of Denmark that is close to the German border, but only there. Everywhere else in Denmark people will look weirdly at you if you say it
