Motoring from Seattle to San Diego

My Husband and I have a 35ft Cooper aft sundeck, we are looking for any advice on motoring from Seattle to San Diego. This would be my first time he's had more. Anything you could tell us would be greatly appreciated!

Re: Motoring from Seattle to San Diego

I was a commercial fisherman in the North Pacific. Late summer/early fall seems to have the most pleasant weather days. Otherwise the prevailing swells are from the NW. After Neah Bay, the next place that's easy to enter is Crescent City, there's no bar. South of SF the ocean is usually milder.

I usually run 25 miles out because the swells get bigger in shallower water. I try to stay in 300+ fms.

Welcome to CruisersForum!

I would suggest getting Jimmy Cornell's "World Cruising Routes" to plan with.

I would also suggest updating your profile with your general location and your boat make & model or “Looking” in the "Boat" category. This info shows up under your UserName in every post in the web view. Many questions are boat and/or location dependent and having these tidbits under your UserName saves answering those questions repeatedly. If you need help setting up your profile then click on this link: https://www.cruisersforum.com/forums...ml#post3308797

I would happily help more if the link above is not enough.

Welcome aboard Schmieder!
Over the years I have collected a few threads in a social group related to Pacific coast of US travel. If you browse through them you'll probably find helpful info:

Cornell's book is for sail and doesn't always translate well to power boats.

Running south is usually a favorable run since the weather is on the stern starboard quarter. That said, southerlies are not uncommon north of Cape Mendocino.

Lepkes post above is good. Crescent City is an easy stop but there are others with reasonable bar crossings. Grays Harbor, Yaquina (Newport OR). Eureka CA is a really nice stop if weather permits.

You may want to check out CFs sister site TrawlerForum.

It's usually a nice run this time of year.
