Moving boat from mazatlan to puerto penasco

Hello, first time posting although I’ve been a subscriber for years. I am thinking about moving my boat, a 31ft Prout, from mazatlan to puerto penasco in late may. I know that this is the beginning of the hurricane season. I am assuming it will take me at least two weeks motoring most of the way. I am not by any stretch of the imagination an expert sailor. Any advice from more experienced sailors out there, which probably includes about everyone, would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Re: Moving boat from mazatlan to puerto penasco

Well, I wouldn't wait much past May and the earlier the better. I have done La Paz to Guaymas a few times and there are lots of places to stop. Not so much on the mainland side but on the peninsula side. One really good hurricane hole is Puerto Escondido. I might be tempted to cross to La Paz, then to Puerto Escondido and if you had to Bahia Concepcion. After that if you have a good weather window, jump across to the mainland and north.Hope this helps a little.

Re: Moving boat from mazatlan to puerto penasco

Last year I left the Loreto area the end of July and headed north to the Bahia de los Angelas area for the summer. By the end of May I don't think think you should have any trouble sailing to Puerto Penasco. These northers should stop by then and the southerlies will push you right up. I would cross over to the Baja side near Bahia de Muertos or La Paz and you could day hop up the Baja from there. You will have plenty of company heading north that time of year. I am hauling out in Puerto Penasco the end of June, might see you up there.

Late May should give you southerlies. I'd go up the Baja side too.

Re: Moving boat from mazatlan to puerto penasco

Thanks all for the input. I originally had thought about jumping over to the Baja side right out of mazatlan. However considering the distance from mazatlan to la Paz I thought it might make more sense going up the mainland side initially. Has anyone been to Los mochis or topolobampo on the mainland side north of mazatlan by about 250 miles?

I have not been there personally. I have friends that sailed from San Carlos down the main land coast line headed to Panama. They enjoyed there time in Topolobampo. I'm not sure where else they stopped along the way.

Re: Moving boat from mazatlan to puerto penasco

Thanks for your input. After looking into it more and reading the responses that I have received I have decided to head over to the Baja side then head north. Hopefully the weather will hold out. I am hopeful that I will be in penasco around the 10th of June.

I don't think that the weather will be a big problem by then. We still have north winds, they are becoming less strong and frequent. Hopefully the southerlies start to fill in soon.
