My cat

Hi.. We are hoping to become live on board cruisers.. Only problem we are going to have is my cat.. Would like to take her with around the Pacific.
Will it be a problem coming back to nz.. Would she have to go in quarantine?
Thanks

Re: My cat

Tricky subject, Oldy. Since the cat was okay before in NZ, I believe she would be allowed to visit other rabies-free locations, but you should really check in depth with NZ Quarantine officers, because the 6 months quarantine might be (a) too expensive for you or (b) very traumatic for the cat. I know of one case where the cat was never sociable with strangers afterwards, and the owners were very unhappy, suspecting that she had been abused. The owners had two cats in quarantine (having arrived by boat): one was okay, but the other not, following the experience.

Re: My cat

Once the cat leaves NZ it will have to go through the bio-security import process unless the only other places you visit are Australia and/or Norfolk Island. Otherwise the same importation rules apply. Most of the Pacific Islands are MPI Category 2, which can mean a quarantine of only 10 days, but worth speaking with them directly, especially if the countries you visit are on the "Pacific Islands" Category 2 list rather than the "Rabies-free" Category 2 list. I would recommend avoiding the Category 3 countries (I think only the Mariana's qualify in the Pacific region).

If you want to go down this road, then the absolutely best preparation you can do before leaving is to make sure the cat is microchipped, the chip is registered to you in NZ, and your vet has attached the chip number to all records. If that cat isn't chipped and you get one, try to get your vet to write a letter attesting that any records prior to the chipping apply to the animal in question. Make sure you understand where you can get a rabies vaccination during your travels so that you can have one within the required timeframe preceding your return.

Re: My cat

Welcome.

I would suggest updating your profile with your general location and your boat make & model or “Looking” in the "Boat" category. This info shows up under your UserName in every post in the web view. Many questions are boat and/or location dependent and having these tidbits under your UserName saves answering those questions repeatedly. If you need help setting up your profile then click on this link: https://www.cruisersforum.com/forums...ml#post3308797

I would happily help more if the link above is not enough.
