Re: New Member

Welcome!! NZ has awesome cruising areas and relatively easy access to wonderful parts of the South Pacific. We started our cruising life from Auckland and the Hauraki Gulf.

Sounds a nice yacht, who built her? Does she sail well?
Cheers

Double diagonal kauri! Lucky you. Lovely wood, and virtually impossible to source these days. Was she glassed at birth or done subsequently?

Six coats of everdure over at birth, then cloth and epoxy over. Everything likes bright and new under..

Thanks for the nice welcome everyone. We're off to our home mooring at Port Ohope next week!

There are few boat hull finishes more beautiful than wood planks encased in epoxy. Lovely. Can you share a photo?

If you’re sailing from Auckland to Port Ohope that’s an awesome route with lots of great places to visit. Though at this time of year you might just have to pick a weather window and go, go, go.

Good friends of ours summer-over in Whangamata and regularly head out to Mayor Island. Very cool spot and great walking. They’re in Tonga right now.

From Port Ohope you’ve got exposed water and some interesting spots like White Island to visit (well, to anchor off of), as well as up towards Tauranga and beyond. I assume you’re familiar with the bar and how to plan your trips across it? At least it’s deeper and wider than the Whakatane entrance.

Pic on my profile, more to follow soon.

There's a few issues with the yacht right now so we're motoring most of the way, so definitely being really careful on the weather window - had one false start so far.

Not up to speed on the Tauranga bar just yet - will get to that. Definitely aware of the backyard we have to play in, from the Ranfurly Bank right through to the Three Kings, and further afield when we're feeling it.

We got our offshore feet with six weeks onboard a big motorsailer, including a passage to Vanuatu - we learned quite a few very harsh lessons, as ya do, but we're up for it now.

Stoked with the nice welcome here! Looking forward to lots of fun stuff.
