Newbees from Halifax, Nova Scotia

Greetings all,

I have been reading various threads on this forum for months now. Just happened to stumble upon it while googling for answers to the many questions we have.
Let us introduce ourselves. We are a late 40's couple with a 5 year plan to leave a life ashore for the dream of living aboard our own sailboat. I am retired from the Navy and miss the sea a lot. My wife is committed to the plan and our kids just want to come visit. We will cruise the Carribean 90% of the time.
While I do have some sailing experience, this will be totally new to my wife. We are both going to do our training together, even though some will only be a refresher for me, I feel we MUST be in this together.
I look forward to many discussions with all of you as we look for information on many topics (some of which we do not even know we need to know!)

Andy and Judy

Welcome, in the last 12,000 miles of cruising Halifax is amongst our fondest memories...Love the fish, chips & Guinness at the Triangle.

But the Caribbean is warmer!!!

Thumbs up Re: Newbees from Halifax Nova Scotia

Welcome! My wife and I started moving forward with our similar plan about 2 years ago. We have taken ASA courses up to 108 in various places around the world, bought into a Sailtime boat for one season in Boston so that we could sail on a regular basis, and now have a boat on order to be delivered in the fall. After the 2 years we are more committed now than ever before. I believe that the courses (spread out at about 2 month increments), buying into the sailtime, sailing on friends boats as much as possible, having subscriptions to all the sailing magazines, attending as many boat shows as possible, joining the blogs, and reading books about sailing kept us motivated and increased our desire. Good luck with your new adventure!

Aloha and welcome aboard!
Its good you are thinking of doing courses together. Lots of military retirees here on the forum. My first sailing courses were offered through military channels and if you have a base close by they might offer some type of courses.
kind regards,

Training together can be great. Try not to "help" each other.

I do not know if you have booked anything yet, but you might contact Dave at Discovery Sailing at Mahone Bay.
