Newbie - just introducing myself - cheers all

All the best from this Canadian sailing Newbie,

My wife and I are planning to retire in 8 years or so, and I'm pushing her to let me rekindle my love of sailing. I've sailed for 10 years or so, in the Great Lakes, and would love to retire on a monohull and travel while I'm still physically comfortable in relative terms.

This is my first post, in preparation for other posts, geared to looking for some good advice from the pool of experience on this Forum.

Fair weather wishes, G

Welcome Gillie70,

Best of luck talking your wife into it, maybe a sailing trip ahead of time would help? I suppose it might also be the experience to kill the idea altogether. Would you start back on the great lakes? Are the locks easily navigable?

Makes me wonder if you need to think about anything when moving a boat between fresh water and salt water.

Welcome, I’m also new. Just thought to add that my wife and I had a similar plan and timeframe. I was asked by an old sea dog why we didn’t just go next week. So we looked into it and we shaved off 11 years of waiting. There was no real reason for waiting when looking into it. We set off this Spring!

And welcome aboard to you, too! All us old sea dogs love an easy sell... your pal either did you a great favor or a great harm, but I'm betting on the favor side. Enjoy the life... we sure do!

Welcome aboard from the wet coast in BC. Good to see another Canuck on the forum. Imo a lot depends on your financial risk quotient re your retirement plans. We had our (really my) retirement date similarly set and based our financial plans around that. We're just coastal cruisers with no plans for extended world cruises, but with a nice shoreside home to maintain as well.
