Not your average CF member...

Hello,
I am a new member here and hope to gain a lot of knowledge from all of the sailing experts here. In exchange, I hope to be able to contribute some of my expertise as well.
I chose my user name not because someone gave me one of those navy blue caps from WM that says "Captain" on it, but because I make my living as the Captain of a large tri-deck diesel burning gazillion dollar obnoxious motor yacht. I hold a USCG Master ticket and have logged many thousands of sea miles from New England to the Caribbean. I admit most of the miles have not come under the power of the wind, but I do have some sailing time under my belt as well.
In the past my wife and I have owned, lived aboard, and been full time cruisers on a sailboat plying the waters of the U.S. East Coast and most of the Bahamas. We have been sailboatless for the past 10 years and have been getting our boating fix on powerboats while we both have full time jobs. However, the time has come to start easing back into the sailing lifestyle and so, I am pleased to announce that I just made an offer on our new sailing/floating home.
I hope to gain some wisdom from the experts here and hopefully make some new friends as well. If all goes as planned We should be residing part time aboard our new boat in St. Augustine FL within a couple of months.
I assume I am not he average member here because I find it is rare that someone that spends as much time on motor yachts as I do is willing to make the switch back to the sailing lifestyle, as they are soooo different. Please don't hate me because I made a deal with the devil in order to make a living

Well dang! A motor terrorist has seen the light!

Welcome aboard and back into "real" sailing

A good deal with the devil is not to be sneered at

Our books have gotten 5 star reviews on Amazon. Several readers have written "I never thought I would go on a circumnavigation, but when I read these books, I was right there in the cockpit with Vinni and Carsten"

At least you're on the water. Welcome, and good luck trying to de-stinkpot yourself in favour of ragbagging it.

Welcome Alex, I am in the same boat as you, literally! The facts are simple: power boats jobs are far more available than sail and pay better!

You are correct, too bad they don't pay enough to be able to afford a lifetime of diesel fuel. Hence my return to sailing!

I just figured most members here are sailors, and in my experience most people like me that have moved to power boats from sail boats, don't move back. Of course you know what they say about making ASSumptions...

Re: Not your average CF member...

I'm pretty sure most members here will resent being called average.

Seriously, there are quite a few members with boats that don't have any sort of mast or sail including houseboats, coastal cruisers, sport fishers, power yachts of various types and even a few semi-gofast type boats.

I do believe to become a member as an owner of a power boat will require special dispensation from the powers that be but since you have an offer on a sailboat you can probably qualify for membership without going through that process.

So in my lefthanded way, welcome.

Thanks, and I stand corrected.

I see you're in Flagler Beach. I'm not far up the road in Gainesville. If you want some advise and opinions from a real sailor drop by. I'm pretty sure I have some opinions and always ready to offer unsolicited advise. On the other hand, considering your background maybe you can offer me some advise.

I also have the only 42' Pearson docked in Alachua County. If you get bored and want to practice your varnishing technique or any other boat maintenance skills come on by. I don't charge for lessons.

Re: Not your average CF member...

It kind of comes down to the fact that hauling stuff pays. Hauling people doesn't, unless you have thousands of them on board.
