What have I done?

Hey guys just dropping a line to kick off the post count (trying to post a photo of a light fixture that I hope you guys can identify) I was recently brought on board a 62 footer as a deck hand because of my time in the Navy. Although I'm eager to learn I don't know much about sailing. Overall I'm here to straighten out the mess that the previous owner left behind and expect to get a lot of questions in the near future.

-D

Ps. I've always wanted to live aboard and now I only want it more doing this seems like a terrible way to get hooked on another expensive hobby.

Re: What have I done?

Welcome aboard CF, E-nerd. Sounds like you've been infected. There's no cure for this disease, but the long term effects are a happy life with a big smile on your face... as long as you are sailing.

Pose questions as you will. You will get lots of answers, some of which are correct, some good answers but to different questions than you asked, and some are pure BS. It's up to you to determine which are which, so good luck. We try to help...

Jim

Have the photo you want to post on your desktop or wherever.

Hit 'reply' then go to 'advanced'.

Then scroll down to Attach files>manage attachments

Then just follow your nose...

Re: What have I done?

Sailing is not a hobby, it's a lifestyle.

Sell competing distractions: golf clubs, motorcycle

No competing events: no weddings, showers, kid's birthday parties. "Sorry I'm on the boat". Initial reaction by friends and family will be frustration, but eventually they'll get it.

Skip the on-board television.

Your new friends will all have boats too. They're better than the landlubber friends.

Re: What have I done?

Welcome to the party, Enginerd -- did you bring rum?

You don't have to do it to participate, but you might want to fill in some of your profile about location, boat, etc. to make responses a little more accurate and save time. Some of the experts on this forum have sailed / motored on literally everything, so when you ask a question they'll first ask things like "which ocean?" or "which particular engine?".
