This indicates that they will roll her over in June . . . .

NEWS:
When in June the critical phase of the salvage of the "Costa Concordia" is due to start, fiber rope from the rope producer OTS in Valderøya off Ålesund will be playing a significant role. The fiber rope frp, Sunnmøre is to keep the ship stable during the turnaround. The ropes to be used are as strong as the steel cable of the same size, but have a considerably lighter weight. The fiber rope is covered with a special sheath that protects ot from abrasion from rocks and other items. These characteristics were crucial for the choice of the salvors. It was the largest single order in the company's history.

The very large specialized rope is an interesting story too. Here is a link to photos of its production . . .

NEWS:
On Apr 3 the first of the six 1,000-ton support platforms was located next to the Costia Concordia. The undersea platforms make it possible to keep the capsized cruise ship upright when it is turned into vertical position. The heavy lift vessel "Svenja" started its work with it's two large cranes at 8.30 a.m. The platform was built at Rosetti yard in Marina di Ravenna and weighs about 1,000 tons, measuring 40 x 33 meters with a height of 22 meters high. It is supported by five columns of almost two meters in Diameter which are to be attached to the ground. Three smaller platform has already been placed and fixed to the seabed seawards of the "Costa Concordia"'s stern in order to stabilize the capsized vessel.

re: Cruise Ship Costa Concordia - MERGED THREADS

Are those ropes the same composition as the towing gear used on the "Kulluk" ?

NEWS:
Salvors have successfully positioned the first port-side sponson that will be used in the 'parbuckling' stage of the wreck removal of the "Costa Concordia". Operations now continued with the installation of the second sponson, and eventually they will be welded on the hull of the wreck. At the same time, drillings for next 10 underwater holes were continued to be carried on in order to position the remaining platforms 2 & 3. 438 workers based at Giglio are currently engaged in operations to float the cruise ship.

re: Cruise Ship Costa Concordia - MERGED THREADS

Here's a link of a BBC video that shows the recovery process. Slightly smarmy narration, but it does shows as good a representation of it as I've seen thus far.

More detail on the project and progress is available on the previously-mentioned The parbuckling project.

The "BBC" video is a PR piece from the salvage team, not BBC News, and is not current.

re: Cruise Ship Costa Concordia - MERGED THREADS

Costa Concordia's hull has deformed ten feet as its starboard side has rested on rocks since sinking. Salvors now now have greater concern for a successful parbuckling being accomplished and there is little remaining time before weather deteriorates. More information is here.
