I keep a couple of these onboard and when I sale a boat, they go with me. I found them most useful in Mexico. Especially Ensenasda. Through the fairlead, I use 2" fire hose. The same at the main cleats on deck. As far as I'm concerned anything else is a yachty way of doing things.

Re: Dock line chafe protection

A bit of firehose around the chain would make this even better as it's kinder to cleat and dock.

Re: Dock line chafe protection

The local marina got new docks after a tsunami, and the new dock cleats have a mold parting line that just chews up dock lines. Most bigger boats have gone to the chain solution, but I just wrapped a few old tshirts around the cleats which have held up for 3 years..

Re: Dock line chafe protection

In addition to fire hose, we really like the Chafe-Pro Yacht Series [they make many different products…] for the use case of having to add chafe protection to a line already in place. [Chafe-Pro wraps around the line and uses heavy duty, sewn in velcro to affix to itself.]

When shopping, note it is always sold in pairs…

In case this is of interest.

Cheers! Bill

PS: Here is a photo of Chafe-Pro Yacht Series installed on the 5/8” primary anchor bridle, and on the back-up 3/4” storm bridle for reference:

Re: Dock line chafe protection

I've found that cordura chafe sleeves as used by foresters lasts longer than fire hose. Cordura is an especially tough nylon weave. It's best to secure it on the rope a little bunched up so the rope slides in the chafe sleeve rather than the chafe sleeve sliding on the sharp edge - this makes the chafe gear last much longer. The 2.5" diameter is easiest to install and will handle ropes up to 1"-1.25" diameter but can be used on smaller.

The chain I’ve seen used on mooring pin.
This is the narrow mooring chuck. Snaps on. I print it in TPU
That's brilliant. It looks like the inside corner is still a bit hard, but perhaps it could be filed rounder?
I'll send a PM to ask how I can get a couple. I can only print in PLA, but I suppose I could have a print shop do it.

I have seen child size, or small women's flip flops, used on cleats in a marina where cyclones sometimes come. Imo, hand-sewn leather chafing gear works fine. You can get bulk offcuts pretty cheap from leather suppliers, and make your own. When you cut the leather (we use a cutting wheel), make the size a little short of the circumference, so you get a good, tight fit, and sew the leather to itself, not through the line it is covering. One can use a fine sail needle or a medium leather needle. They have similar shapes.

I was using the same earlier this fall. Slit it lengthwise to try to prevent heat buildup. It is a quick and cheap $0.60/ft solution, but they sure deformed quickly.

I bought a leather chafe kit from Go2Marine for $6, just to try it out. I plan to buy scrap leather like you mention and add to yet to be purchased new mooring lines later this winter. The leather sure looks yachty. Maybe I'll balance the look with the chain around the cleats.
