Re: Does anyone in Australia know a yard that can build and fit paravanes?

All this is really useful info.

I am thinking that a combination of these ideas might be a good way to go: roll chocks and a medium length, relatively heavy mast, on a frame that just clears the wheelhouse roof (with boom for lifting dingy) could work well. I'll make some phone calls in the coming week.

If there are any naval architects looking, I am wondering if some ballast will help with the roll chocks/mast idea. There is already a small amount of concrete in the lazarette; it could be added to the other three compartments too.

Cool It would be nice to have an update sometime down the road with your progress and results on your boat.

Good to see these old girls out cruising

That's the most surprising thing about SB (my shorthand for "Seabiscuit"): she splashed in 2008, after a build that started in 2003... A solo shipwright, apparently.

The history is not completely clear, but her plans describe her as a "Bass Strait" cray boat with the standard small wheelhouse and a large fish well behind it on an open deck. And that's why her fuel tanks are in the lazarette (1,200 litres), and the engine, a Perkins 6.2544 in the next compartment. All her weight is behind the mid-point (length-wise) and only a Sea Wasp in the generator compartment (where the fish well was planned).

Anyway, the old builder ran out of money; the boat was sold and changed hands rapidly in a couple of years, and the last owner neglected her. I have spent the last year bringing her up to scratch. Once I have the stability/roll response I want, I am going places in her.

Adding ballast to the generator compartment would be relatively easy, I think, if someone who understands these boats suggests this.

Interesting about the Crayboat design, a lot of the timber Tassie/Bass Strait Crayboats of old had the wheelhouse aft, but this looks like she was designed to have the working deck aft of the WH, I'm assuming she never actually got to pull a pot over the side?

I see the old Boden Boat Plans website is still up....

That's right; the original builder converted the wheelhouse to a full cabin, and added a generator to where the fish well would have been. It never hauled a pot, that's for sure!

When I went to the Boden Home page just now, this boat that came up is similar to SB. The specs are similar, too.

Don't know if it was ever much of a success but there was a roll dampening system based upon ballast tanks situated at the beams with a joining flume called flume dampening.

Thats what i thought when i linked to it.....

There's one plus to her never "working", you don't have to try and get rid of the fishy smell after years of it soaking in to the timber, a friend of mine has a 57ft ex Tassie cray boat that he and his wife live on and she swears she can still smell it faintly, although everytime i go on it all i can smell is Lavender.....

Yes, I have heard of these; there are active and passive versions, too. I have been talking to a retired Canadian professor who designs ART (active roll tanks) that sit on top of the wheelhouse, and which have baffling that's tuned to the boa's roll period. Like paravanes, these work better on rounder hulls.

And to IslandHopper: Amen to that!

Flume is a Brand/Trademark name for passive roll damping tanks, usually known as "Stab Tanks", Flume is just a companies name for there particular version of a technology that has been in use for a long time.

Most Offshore Anchor Handling/Supply vessels have been constructed with them for as long as i can remember, plenty of other type vessels out there have stab tanks to...this is normally larger vessel stuff and usually fitted to vessels with big variations in loaded conditions, i would think retro fitting a 40ft timber boat is out of the design scope and would be an very expensive and complicated exercise.

Kit

You could try contacting Trawler Forum member Tidahapah. He installed paravanes, and a mast, a couple of years ago. Work was done on the Gold Coast.

Re: Does anyone in Australia know a yard that can build and fit paravanes?

I don't think ballast will make a huge difference. Paravanes will. I had oversize floppers on my boats and they almost didn't roll. I could easily walk the deck in almost any sea. If the boat has a keel, adding to it will have a dampening effect. When I was a fisherman, I saw several boats converted to fishing from navy 40'-50' launches. Most added a foot or more to the keel. They cut a beam the same width as the keel, tapered it into the bow, and put in new keel bolts.

Lepke, thanks for that—very interesting.

I have a call in to a yard in Brisbane; they are fitting paravanes to a wooden boat this week, so that will be interesting, and I will report back.

This yard specialises in roll chocks, and "bat-wing" stabilisers, but do paravanes too.
