Re: I Get Teased About Nautical Terms

When in a conversation, I try to use a vocabulary that the I think the other party will understand. Sort of like, attempting to communicate with the opposite sex when you are 14 years old!!!

Re: I Get Teased About Nautical Terms

How about steering or parking a boat. It's a long list. Is it really important? It may only indicate those using the "wrong" terminology have never read what they may should have?

Re: I Get Teased About Nautical Terms

I must admit that I steer and dock my boat, but when doing the same thing on a catamaran I'll call it "drive" and "park"

I prefer drive over steer, because to me, steering indicates only holding the wheel, but driving implies greater responsibility, like driving a car. If I ask you to drive, that means I want you to steer AND keep your eyes open for traffic and monitor sail trim. Under power, the driver is watching traffic and adjusting throttle, just like driving a car (only different). When you ask someone to steer, often you mean more than that.

Docking will never be "parking," unless the pavement starts moving like the tide . Docking a cat is not easier, only different:
* More windage.
* Can't reach any lines from the helm. Forget it. Which makes single handing more fun.
* Slips are tighter fits in many cases.
* Back in every time.
* Twin engines really helps... but if one is out it is MUCH worse.

That one b.... my spiel then.
Used to teach kids at an activity centre, most knew nothing so first day briefing, whilst pointing:
"Top; Bottom; Left; Right; Sharp end Forward; Blunt end follows - Any change to that arrangement, please tell me so we can panic!"
After that, it was always use the nautical term and explain it in non-nautical terms.
During the week, or weekend, slowly drop the non-nautical.

Re: I Get Teased About Nautical Terms

i must admit we've given up using terms like cabin, saloon & galley. on our cat it's much more like bedroom / lounge room / kitchen

guess it depends on whether it still feels like a boat ?

cheers,

Wher do the arrows point to on your wenches. Do you also have a "wrong hole" label?

Re: I Get Teased About Nautical Terms

You may not like our boat at first. It has no floors, walls, ceilings, or stairs. It has no kitchen, bedroom, beds, bathrooms, or toilets.You may worry when you learn that we have no maps. It won’t take you long to find that it is both safe and comfortable.

generally i use the wording: "pointy end and ar8e end"
Maybe that is a solution for the 2 pointy end boats

A un engaged human, friend or relative is a liability on a vessel, to every body else and to the vessel. Nomenclature Chop busting can always be countered with reciprocal jocularity
If you know there interests or occupation.

If your wenches need direction arrows, I wonder if it would be safer to leave those women on the dock.
