That's it! I'm naming my boat "Obvious" so I can be Captain of the Obvious.

Re: I Get Teased About Nautical Terms

Friend of mine used to shout "NO not that rope, THAT ROPE!" in moments of stress.

A "spur lash"?????
The noise you make when you fall in the water of course.

Seriously, I counted up just the lines, rope, sheets etc on our boat - came to nearly 50 - just easier to give each a name which is going to be transferable from boat to boat.

Re: I Get Teased About Nautical Terms

I'm not sure why this would be a real-world problem. Who cares if non-boaters mock the nomenclature of boats? (It only highlights their ignorance in their unwillingness to accept and learn new and different things). If you're a non-boater and you're on my boat, I'm not going to change what I call things just because you can't wrap your head around it. I will call it what it is, if you ask, I'll explain it to you. But then again, I don't have non-boaters taking on operations roles on my boat. So they don't really need to understand a spring line, breast line, or anything else. About all they hear is "I need you to sit right there", "You're free to move about as you please", and "We need quiet on deck for the next few minutes so we can communicate clearly while were docking"....."No, we don't need any assistance docking, we do it all the time, even when you're not here".

What they need to understand is how the head works, where their berth is, and where the beer and booze is kept. Never had anyone laugh when I told them the beer is in the fridge in the galley.

I think the terms are ridiculous. Time to move on.

Re: I Get Teased About Nautical Terms

My terminology is all jacked up. I’ll say ‘leave it to port/starboard’ but then say something is stored on the left/right side of the boat. Bow/stern, fore/aft, sure but sometimes front/back make it in there. The wheel is the wheel.

Whatever happens to come out of my mouth is what it’s called on my boat. I enjoy sailing, I’m not too concerned with looking and sounding like a sailor.

Re: I Get Teased About Nautical Terms

The term I've found to be confusing most often (especially when reading posts in the Cruisers Forum) is "cat." It seems that more and more often people are shortening "catamaran" and simply saying (or writing) "cat." Now - when I see that word in reference to a boat I think of the sailboat with the single mast waaaay up front - with no head sail.

To me, what you describe is a "catboat". Occassionally as two words, but very rarely, if ever, abbreviated.

The only time I come across "cat" used in that context is in the full phrase "cat rigged". Otherwise it's an abbreviation for catamaran. (as in Hobie Cat, power cat etc )
