Re: Knot Funny

My list is in order of

the importance that the newbie who is my only crew get it right when I need them to, and

the likelihood that I'm relying on said newbie to be the one tying this knot.

1) Cleat hitch on the stern spring line if we're nosing in.
2) Cleat hitch on the bow spring line if we're backing in.

3) Round turn and two half hitches on the fenders.
4) Round turn and two half hitches on the tender.

5) corkscrew stopper
5) Reef-not-granny knot (when I'm not on a boat with a stack pack)

Bonus Round: Letting go of the cleat knot on the stern cleat as we spring off when I say to, and not when we start nosing out.

Bowlines, sheep bends, rolling hitches, etc., are not knots that I rely on my first-timer guests to tie.

Of course I do. What do you mean? Ah, you mean I tie a cleat hitch to the other end. Very good.

Re: Knot Funny

I'll add another vote each for the trucker's hitch and butterfly bend (or alpine butterfly).

Another lesser-known but very handy use for the butterfly is to isolate a chafed or otherwise damaged section of line. If you tie the bend so that the damage is in the loop, you can continue to use the line until it can be replaced (ASAP). You just can't run it through any blocks or such.

Whether the truckers hitch should be classified as a knot is debateable

Considering that it's actually a collection of knots in different parts of a rope and there are multiple common ways to tie the loop and the locking knots, I don't consider it a knot, but a lashing.

Nearly. Points lost as the move is incomplete without rolling over the second coil as well .

You then have a multiple overhand that could be used to help heave a line. Also useful to help remember your vows if you enter any religious orders.

Easy peasy. Level of difficulty: only 2. Not Olympic worthy unless tying single handed blindfolded .

Very cool!

Thanks, Navigator! (I love the sextant in your avatar)

Don!

You drink something called SHEEP DIP? (Atleast it's a single-malt.)

Here's a favoured Canadian indulgence local to Newfoundland. I hear it's sort-of terrible, but Mike O'Reilly will have to speak to that...

All of you in Auz - make sure you get tickets and go see Come From Away https://comefromaway.com.au/ when it comes to your town, if you can. Fantastic Canadian musical and lots of (true) stories about Newfoundland!

Have you ever kissed a cod?

Warmly,

Well, Seaworthy,

I may have come up short as far as judges' marks and level of difficulty, but the "incomplete" knot works as is. Not meant for heaving.

Good solid stopper that does NOT come loose, nor has to be continually retied, so it has my enthusiastic endorsement (in case anyone had missed that by now.)

Fair winds!

Re: Knot Funny

I would place Tug Boat hitch somewhere in my 'must have' inventory - if you are tieing to bollard (or to winch drums) it is proper and best.
