Re: Leopard 46 lost in French Polynesia - stunning rescue pictures

Cherod,

It's sitting on the SW corner of Huahine's fringe reef. Hard to get at to work on. Plus, it's a big cat, with a big, strong, heavy mast and rigging. I agree there's potential value in it, but think it would be very hard to snag and transport safely. There is far less superstructure there than in Scotland.

****************

I agree, it would be interesting to watch how it was done, but probably not much fun to be there, hove to, watching.

Ann

Well I am not suggesting nor , not being a diver or even keen on sub aqua stuff , being involved now that it has been sunk but while it was still sitting on the reef , no not for the faint hearted nor incapable but well do-able for those that are

That is quite a sentence. Could you please try again? Maybe mix in a period or two and break it down? I am not trying to be the grammer police, I just couldn't understand what you are trying to say. Thank you.

Re: Leopard 46 lost in French Polynesia - stunning rescue pictures

Getting the mast of is easy; simply loosen one side holding it up. Getting the mast of safely is a bit challenging. Getting the mast of in a manner to be able to reuse it in the present condition looks almost impossible (you would need a rather tall crane of some sort). Maybe you could rig some sort of 'hinge' and pivot it off? Or when they get it of the reef bring it alongside somewhere to further strip it. Maybe even dispose of it in another friendlier for the environment (but more expensive) way.

I didn't know polyester (resin) will not be too harmful.

I believe it is already disposed of / sunk which will make the job more difficult , unless one is an experienced diver in which case that could make the job easier ,, or did I read that it was in thousands of feet , making it almost impossible certainly not economically viable , yes definitely better earlier ( when in the reef ) than later ( now , sunken ).

Hmm, they might try to get in onshore an recycle it into a home! Much better than scuttling.

Re: Leopard 46 lost in French Polynesia - stunning rescue pictures

I keep thinking about that big old mast. . . . My skinflint scavenger mind envisions an entertaining method of saving it.

It's probably too late, but they could attach some mooring buoys to the top of the mast and a few along its length; detach (and save) all rigging; make sure the mast is detached at the step. Maybe keep a few stays temporarily in place so the mast doesn't fall during the tow out to the scuttling location. Then, shortly before she goes to Davy Jones, sawzall the fiberglass around its insertion point through the cabintop to make sure it's all free to go. . . .

Sink boat, and the mast bobs to surface. Tow the mast to harbor and get a dozen strong guys to carry it wherever you want it.

Well, it might be fun to try. . . .

The thought is kind, but scuttled she would eventually provide a home for millions.
