Lock off Wheels / Rudder in a Swell?

Hello all,

We were caught in quite a swell during our time in Guernsey. Big waves rolling into the marina and causing everyone a lot of worry. Everyone was up at 3am putting more fenders out, doing what they could.

When I woke to do the same the first thing I noticed was our dual wheels were wildly swings one way, hitting, then swinging the other, I guess as the water hit the rudder on the way into the marina and then back out. I proceed the lock the wheels off but wanted to check this is the correct thing to have done? I noticed others around me were doing the same.

Any advice would be most welcomed.

Regards,
Simon

I do not think you want the rudder flying from stop to stop. You risk serious damage. I lock the wheel and go a step further with tying a sail tie around the wheel and pedestal.
