Re: Mooring alongside single handed

Mooring alongside. Line from midship cleat with enough length to reach to just past Transom. Tie to cleat/ring on dock, put in gear with helm over to Stbd, raise RPM to just above idle, more if its windy and watch your boat glue itself tothe dock. I do this departing or arriving. Makes it easy only having to deal with a single line and gives you plenty of time to sort out the rest of your lines to fully dock or undock.
Port side works well for a normal RH prop as a burst of astern prop walk brings your stern in when arriving.
STBD side to if you have a LH prop.
I did 143 locks in the French canals single handed using this method and it worked a treat.
Cheers happy docking.

Re: Mooring alongside single handed

If the op was asking about getting a line through a ring without stepping off -

I face this problem regularly myself.

I've used the expensive "Hook n Moor" but find it fiddly.

I now use a Baltic style mooring hook like most Nordic sailors. This is much quicker and more reliable, at the expense, however, of the potential to scratch your topsides, if you pull the line up too short.

That book by Duncan Wells - Stress-free Sailing: Single and Short-handed Techniques - discusses the problems he's had with "wobbly French finger berths".

These have a bar on the end, rather than cleats. He's lassoed the entire end of the pier, and that's worked when no one else was tied to it.

He's been playing with small toy grapnels,

We´ve been using this: https://www.kong.it/en/2-products/it...8-mooring-hook for several years to different kind of side moorings where it really helps. No need to go down to pier/pontoon before spring line is attached and motor w.low rpm fwd or back keeping boat in place. The slot profile is attached to dedicated simple wooden handle which is usually ready for use by side of back deck`s toe rail. For buoys we usually use the "scandinavian style" hook.

I had one of those, but bent it pretty quickly.

Note that it is only rated for 24kgf!

Re: Mooring alongside single handed

We haven´t had problems w. durability yet (2,4 ton braking load)

We´re around 12 tons light cruising weight.

It is used to aid docking, for longer parking and/or windy/swelly places we replace or secure w. rope or stronger hook.

By preference I use a mooring hook such as https://www.mauriprosailing.com/us/p...saAsJdEALw_wcB .

I carry two for stern lines Med mooring and for a backup line on a buoy. I don't remember where I got mine, they are beefier than the Wichard I linked to above. In the end once you are hooked up you can shift to something more substantial.

On delivery I often have to be more creative. I've used chain hooks on snubber lines. If the ring is too far from the deck edge (vertically and/or horizontally) that can lead to "fishing" for the ring. That's time consuming and can lead to undue excitement in some conditions.

This is also the easiest way to do a med mooring. It always surprises me that most people here in the med do not know about it.

Re: Mooring alongside single handed

Sometimes the wind and current make it dangerous for a singlehander. You always have the option of anchoring out, either for the night, until you can get some help, or until the tide changes. A few hours may make all the difference.

Re: Mooring alongside single handed

When singlehanded it is very useful to have a carabiner - the largest they make - on the end of a line. Then you can at least clip on to a ring long enough to organize a proper line. Sometimes you only get a second or two to make that first connection if there is a lot of wind or current or, as sometimes happens, the approach is less than perfect.
