My boat which I bought last year has hit 2 whales. The last owner was fined $10,000 for hitting a whale he did not see. Was caught on camera. I think a fast moving trimaran might be hard for them to avoid.

I guess you've been watching the Wave Rider buoy data?

Real time data, not predictions (or empty promises).

You can see the aggregated data for the wave buoys installed by the NSW govt at: [[ MHL NSW Ocean Wave Data Collection Program ]]

Depending whether you want to turn to port or starboard after exiting the Clarence, you might focus on either

the Byron Bay wave buoy: [[ MHL Byronbay Wave Data ]]

or the Coffs Harbour wave buoy: [[ MHL Coffsharbour Wave Data ]]

Not so far, and I don't think this will get that far. The rain has been a nuisance but not really protracted nor really heavy... and I think mostly near the coast.

Fingers crossed!

Looks like some sort of data anomaly to me, or maybe a whale gave it a whack!

Jim for what it's worth today we here in southern Sydney have only had two periods of rain today, I believe it's getting better. At least I hope it is.

Don't worry Jim. That's 8 days away. This will be a distant memory by then. But can we remember that far back ???? J

This morning's look at the web camera makes it look hopeful for the early Thursday departure from the River. Wooohooo!

Can be exceptionally fast. Water by it's very nature likes to side with gravity given no other forces. We have recently seen 7 metre seas down to 1 metre in about twelve hours here in Newfoundland.

Re: Rate of Sea State Subsiding (Oz SE Coast)

Just to report back here, we departed the breakwalls around 06:30, on Thursday, --it was still pretty lumpy--went well offshore, and caught "the escalator" (the East Australia Current), and picked up a mooring in Coaster's Retreat about 19:20 Fri. night. Saw many ships, about one per hour, no whales at all out there, and good breeze offshore like that.

Caught your excellent run south on FindShip showing speeds up to 10kts at times, well done.

Re: Rate of Sea State Subsiding (Oz SE Coast)

We have made move also on thursday from Southport to Camden Haven. Excellent o/n sail and not a single whale seen. My wife happy.

Speed stayed 10 to 11 kn for many day hours. At night 2 x reefed main only fighting to slow down.

Shipping was an issue. Some aggressive liners forced me to alter direction quite a bit.

Entry in bar in 2m swell was challenging, at least for us newbies. I am not fun of bars.

Re: Rate of Sea State Subsiding (Oz SE Coast)

Hi Ann and Jim,
We crossed that bar 15 times without problem. Last time the swell seemed fine and we crossed at the right angle but a huge wave lifted the bows and then the second one came over the boat and partly filled the dinghy!
You never know, be careful.
Our Mumby 48 draws only 70 centimetres, we continued our journey and there was only 1 meter of swell outside!
Hope you are well, see you somewhere on the water.
Cheers
Daniel

Re: Rate of Sea State Subsiding (Oz SE Coast)

Hi, guys, we've come in and out of Iluka for years, now, no idea how many times. The reason I was feeling pressure was that Jim had a fairly critical medical appointment to meet (had not been able to make appropriate substitute plans in Grafton), and the high was still strengthening when I started the thread. At any rate, he made his original appointment, and the news was okay. So all's well that ends well.

Dare I say, it's swell?

Ann
