Re: Rogue Wave

Rogue waves, called 'extreme storm waves' by scientists, are those waves which are greater than twice the size of the significant wave height of the area. The significant wave height is the average of the highest one-third of waves, that occur over a given period.

Re: Rogue Wave

I was surprised to find out boats are way tougher than I am. From the flybridge of a forty foot SeaRay I watched the boat submerge 4 hatches two long side windows the rear sliding door wide open.
The 395’s never missed a beat two bilge pump lights came on I turned on the third manual before I noticed the bow was out and taking on the rouges partner. Scared the crap out of us and the second wave would have been doom without the bow high and throttles to the wall.

Schrödinger's cat: a cat, a flask of poison, and a radioactive source are placed in a sealed box. If an internal monitor (e.g. Geiger counter) detects radioactivity (i.e. a single atom decaying), the flask is shattered, releasing the poison, which kills the cat. The Copenhagen interpretation of quantum mechanics implies that, after a while, the cat is simultaneously alive and dead. Yet, when one looks in the box, one sees the cat either alive or dead, not both alive and dead. This poses the question of when exactly quantum superposition ends and reality resolves into one possibility or the other.

The boat they sailed was a ship’s boat from the Endurance, a craft a bit longer than about 22, maybe 24, ft. It was open except that the ship’s carpenter constructed a small deck at the bow affording minimum shelter for one or two crew at a time; plus other for needs. Naturally, their course was down-wind and down-seas; probably sailing a broad reach. Their greatest concern was “passing” South Georgia Island, i.e. finding themselves down-wind of it.

That looks about right from my memory. I don’t have the book here to consult.

It should look 'about right' as it is a faithful reproduction of James Caird in the 'maritime museum' at Punta Arenas.

That wikipedia entry seems to have been sanitised, it missed this bit of her life

I recall reading her 'Children of Cape Horn' many years ago.

The original James Caird is still in existence and belongs to a private boarding school in England. It was shown a few years ago at the London Boat show were I was fortunate to see it.

It's tiny and an astonishing feat of seamanship to find South Georgia in the middle of the South Atlantic.
