First heat let's change the frame of reference. Picture yourself in the middle of the ocean on your boat in a 10 knot current. Wind relative to the ocean floor is 0 knots. With the sails down such that you're not moving relative to the water, the boat sees 10 knots of wind. You put up sails and sail upwind. Let's say your knotmeter reads 5 knots through the water. If you tack through 90 degrees your VMG is 0.7 of that so 3.5 knots made good to the east through the water. Neither you nor the boat can detect that you're in current, all you know is that there is 10 knots of wind and you sail upwind through that parcel of water.

The entire body of water is traveling at 10 knots, your speed in this body of water is 3.5 knots, so you add the two to get 13.5 knots east relative to the bottom.

First heat wins.

The physics of sailing

Oh, posting a link to the reply is such a dampener , I was having fun.

Have to present first prize to CF's newest recruit Capt Rottnest. Congrats!
Not many people were gutsy enough to give any reply, so my hat comes off to all those that responded.

Night all xxx.

Re: Sailing Puzzle

I forgot the part about sailing.

I was just floating with the current drinking beer as cruising means it does not matter if I am going 10 knots or 13.5.

In fact going 10 without having to trim and having a black ball up means I have the right of way, right?

Does that mean something else in Oz? (She speaks Australian.)

Protest Flag... you are moving the goal posts to get the answer you want. (the which, of two choices, I have correct)
and It's still not plain that the RACE would not be cancelled.
I'm sure I'm not the only person that expects a trick when it's called "a puzzle"

Re: Sailing Puzzle

I think this is the only time when the macGregor 26X wins.

After careful consideration a final verdict has come in from the race committee and your protest has been dismissed. In the absence of further information, your initial reponse seemed to be based on the second race being cancelled.
Race committee's decision is final. No redress or appeals.
Time to hit the bar.
