Thanks, Marc.

I was actually wondering about Ever Forward's status just this morning. I knew that she was at anchor and they were sounding her hull, etc., but as there were no follow-up reports, we were just left to wonder.

Cheers and thanks,

That's the nice think about running aground in the Chesapeake Bay mud. It's not going to tear your keel off.

Is pride measured by the square foot? That was A LOT of pride, then.

The only way to fulfill your hate is to stop buying sh*t. Otherwise they are there for the long haul.... See what I did there?

Re: Sistership EVER FORWARD Run Aground in the Chesapeake

She ran aground off Bodkin Point, which is our home creek. Saw her at the Baltimore terminal on Saturday (?) re-loading the offloaded containers and see on MarineTraffic that she is now in Norfolk. Gone as if nothing "Ever Happened."

I understand Baltimore has sent Evergreen a bill for $100 million. The bill should have gone to the pilots association.

Since this didn't happen in the City of Baltimore I'm not sure what basis that would be under? I think you may be confabulaating the state of Maryland asking for a $100M bond for potential future damages. Which I think it a political stunt by the guy trying to be the next Governor that has no chance of happening, btw.

Re: Sistership EVER FORWARD Run Aground in the Chesapeake

Thanks for clarifying. So the State of Maryland is responsible for regulating the pilot whose error likely put the ship aground, and now wants the shipowner to pony up $100 million for the cleanup.

Kinda like the owners of suez canal provided the pilot that ran the ever given aground, but yet they sued evergreen as well...

Well sheesh. If they are gonna provide the pilots to direct the ships with all their local k owledge and expertise. And force the ships to have their pilots aboard, They should take the responsibility for navigational errors, and the burden for when damages occur.

But that’s just me thinking logically...

I wasn't aware that the accident investigation had concluded and determined that the pilot was at fault. Can someone suggesting that provide us a link, I'd be very interested in reading it. I can't seem to find it on the NTSB or CG sites.

Re: Sistership EVER FORWARD Run Aground in the Chesapeake

There is nothing published about the cause yet. The fact that the ship was quickly back in service points pretty much eliminates mechanical failure. Weather was not a factor. She went outside a buoyed channel with range lights. After being freed and returning to Baltimore to reload containers, she reran her original departure course at the same speed as when she grounded. She simply missed a well marked turn. Looking at the AIS track there was no attempt to change course when she needed to.

As one of the professional mariners said on gCaptain, "The ship knew exactly what happened either within 30 seconds of running aground, or within 30 minutes if something down below happened." A study of the VDR and the Bridge audio recorder should have clearly defined the cause in less than 2 days. I'd give the NTSB and USCG a week to interview and drug test the crew and pilot.

This case will be an embarrassment for the pilots and the state system that mandates their use. The shipping company has used the General Average clause to pass the costs of the grounding on to the shippers of the containers aboard, so they probably don't care. Care to bet if and when the cause will be reported?
