First, I need to make up for about 30 hours straight of no sleep at the end. Going through Norfolk waters is a tough ending. It's a hornets nest of ships over 200 meters.

Welcome back and well done!

random photos. Glassy ocean. Strange puffed up jellyfish. my ugly mug. My water tank (cell phone fished out from below) sun rays. My bruised hip. Underway. my cozy little nest. my mug again in rain gear. socked in with fog. my reacher. and down below.

More replies later. Surprisingly, I've spent all day cleaning the vessel and time passed quickly. Click image for larger version

Re: Test #1

ArmyS,

What a great passage. It was a privilege reading your Predict Wind posts. Looked forward to it everyday. (Lake sailing is NOT the same as the ocean!)

Well done.

Now to sit back, bask in the triumph (briefly) and start planning your next passage...

Warmly,

Yes, that was great. I think many of us are wondering what's next ? Back to Bermuda for a stop or someplace further ?

Kudos on a voyage well done !

Thanks for confirming that, Boatie. I thought so myself, but I don't think I've ever seen anything but a picture, so a live one in the ocean is really unusual, eh.

Is it true their "sting" (which is actually a form of electrocution) can kill a human?

Yup.. they can kill if you get entangled in their tentacles but an individual sting will just leave you feeling like crap..
(QUOTE) This marine animal that’s known for its intensely blue hue can sting you while you’re swimming in the ocean or walking around on the beach. Their stings are one of the most painful and intense of all jellyfish-like creatures, so it’s important to start treating the symptoms right away to lower your pain and discomfort levels. If you’re having severe symptoms, like chest pains or shortness of breath, call for emergency services.(QUOTE)
They were pretty common in the Sargasso but have spread quite extensively over the last few decades thanks to shipping, along with other invasive species.
Came across a massive birthing off Sardinia a few years back where I spent 2hrs going through them in varying sizes from 1/2inch upwards, thousands of the buggas.
We called them 'Bluebottles' in India/Pakistan.. the Atlantic version is more violet/pink than blue.

Re: Test #1

FWIW: The Portuguese man o' war [AKA: Bluebottle] is, in fact, a siphonophore*, not a jellyfish.

The Portuguese Man of War’s numerous tentacles have the capacity to deliver multiple highly toxic stings [not electric], to its prey. These stings also rank as extremely painful.
The toxins these secrete, paralyzes, and often kills the numerous small fish that it preys upon. Although not typically fatal to humans directly, multiple stings can cause paralysis. This can prove fatal if the human victim is in deep water.

A "siphonophore" ! Well, that's certainly one for the vocabulary...
