these corumel winds are at 30 knots

Howling winds, I'm glad I anchored right and didn't get lazy. We're at Balandra, is it like this everywhere?

I've sailed this boat through a gale at 45 knots, but this crap is like clockwork sunset to sunrise every day. Makes me wish I had a wind generator.

Re: these corumel winds are at 30 knots

Wait until you go farther north and experience a Chabbasco or an Elapante.

We experienced one each in Bay of LA in the summer of 2011. The Chabassco hit us at 55 knots in the beam and laid the boat over 30 degrees before it swung into the wind. The Elaphante blew at 40 knots for 13 hours, which sucked since it comes from the desert with incredibly hot winds and dust.

But to answer you original question, yes over here on Tuesday we got whacked with a 50 knot squall and terrifying lightning. The boat next to me at the dock was struck and I lost a laptop to the EM pulse from the strike. The last 36 hours it has been blowing 25-30 knots...

With all the storms coming down from the US, this year's winds in the Caribbean suck

That place is beautiful by day, and awful at night.
No place to anchor except on a rocky bank, everywhere else is either too deep or too shallow!

We dragged there at 2 am along with 3 others.

Has anyone marked the unmarked reef yet?
We were pretty nervous about accidentally finding it in the dark that night.

The one in the northeast corner? A couple of rocks sticking up, maybe you mean the one off diablo point?

We cruised Mexico from 1993 through 1997 and everyone said,
"Watch out for the uncharted reef in Balandra."
Nobody seemed to have a clue of where it was.

There's been a lot of "cruiser folklore" I've noticed. One guy gets an outboard stolen, lat 38 writes it up, the VHF nets squack about it, and two years later people keep talking about xyz port's crime problem.

Re: these corumel winds are at 30 knots

The reef is in the southeast side of Bay near point. It is marked now.Ballandra is a rolly anchorage at the best of times.Head a 1/2 mile south to Caleta Lobos,(sometimes Bobos).Very sheltered compared to Ballandra, and good cell reception. There are newly surveyed paper charts available for the SOC and are very accurate.

Where can someone pick up the new charts? I wouldn't mind grabbing a few for this area.
