It's no different than fishing.... I'll be fishing a spot all alone, no one around for miles; before you know it, I've got neighbors right on top of me.

Re: Why People Anchor on Top of Other Boats?

In an unknown anchorage I always park where the other boats are parked. Theres gotta be a reason for it.

Then I go jump in the dink with my lead line and check out the rest of the bay to see if theres a better spot.

If someone anchors too close I go below for 30 minutes so they have time too decide to move.

If they are still too close I will dinghy over and have a chat about something else entirely. At the end of the conversation they will normally admit being too close, or if they don't I'll ask them. If they are too close astern I will say I am on a short chain and need to let out another 20 meters.

Re: Why People Anchor on Top of Other Boats

This is where a Catamaran comes in handy. We always anchor where nobody else can go in a secluded spot. When they see you coming some boats will warn you ,we just smile and wave at them and keep going very slowly untill we are far away from others.

Re: Why People Anchor on Top of Other Boats

When that shiny Jenneau anchors too close to me (like talking close), I usually say to them that my boat is an old Pearson and that my insurance will buy me a new boat if they come down on me and sink me so they are free to stay there. Most move at that point.

Naked and Barry Manilow works too, especially if they have kids.

Well it's obvious that you know where the fish are.

+1 That the Honda generators are "too quiet to hear" is an urban legend that owners WANT to believe. I'd rather live with the low rumble of a diesel generator than the whine of a Honda generator.

Re: Why People Anchor on Top of Other Boats

Off topic a little
Last sunday, while on a deco stop at 10 feet on the anchor line with a lot of scope, another dive boat put his twin props seven feet above my (and my students) head. He said he knew we were there, just had a brain fart. He wanted the mooring line in front of us. We had words.....

Re: Why People Anchor on Top of Other Boats

Update on our anchorage: two boats of the people who tried to anchor close dragged. One reanchored outside the protection of the bay (even though there is PLENTY of space inside with ok holding) but close to us. The other one left.

Strange people.

Are you sure they didn't have too much wine and beer onboard and were looking to unload some of it?

Re: Why People Anchor on Top of Other Boats

I welcome them.. If a big fancy rich yacht anchors next to me, I will just row over and introduce myself. They usually see my small boat and feel pity, so they invite me about for drinks and food. After drinking all their beer and filling up on their fine feast. I will BS about sea stories to the point that they usually want me to leave. Then I stumble back to my dink, row home and wait for the next “victim”. Usually they will make a point to never anchor anywhere near me again..

This works! Had Ken on my boat this weekend and pulled into a crowded anchorage/mooring field. By dark all there were left was 4 well spread out boats.

Of course in his posting Ken doesn't tell you that this is him in the photo.

Re: Why People Anchor on Top of Other Boats

OK Don,,,,,

I think you sang more than I did.

Had a wonderful time meeting both you and your wife. Loved sailing on the hunter. First trip on one and i am impressed with the layout and room that were inside the boat. You can easily fit more than 6 with MUCH room to spare in the cockpit.

Only problem was with the chef. Who cooks rack of lamb and serves it with potato chips??????? O wait that was me who did. Forgot the mint jelly and rosemary potatoes but the salsa flavored chips still hit the spot.

I do think that the anchorage cleared out when i started talking about singing barry manilow,, but before i could i went to bed. Very comfortable bunk.

Thanks for the great weekend and memories
