adhesive grip pads for dishware

A friend just gave me a really nice set of melamine dishware, but I'd like to add grip pads or rings to the bottoms. Does anyone know of a good permanent-adhesive backed product that comes in round dots or pads, or sheets that can be custom cut?

We used to use silicone sealer applied as a thin ring on the rim of the dish. The dish was inverted on to wax paper and allowed to dry. It worked pretty well. We also found that a damp cloth had about the same non skid effect.

THIS^ ! works great. This bowl was done nearly 30 years ago!
3 dots would work fine actually.

Thanks guys, interesting idea! I'm still hoping to find a ready made product, but I'll give this a try if I can't find anything else.

Never tried these on dishware, but I've used these on the bottom of glass cutting boards and they work great.

The only other thing I can think of is that felt stuff you put on the bottom of chair and table legs to stop them scratching a wooden floor.

We have some none slip place mats, which reminds me I need some more, just not at these prices.

Thanks, but I think you mis-pasted the link.

Thanks, but I think these are to make things slide better, not less.

We've never used any product to prevent dishes (or glasses) from sliding other than our hands.

We bought a set of Correlle in 1990. It is beautiful, lightweight, and very durable. We have been using them since that date. I think we have broken only a single one in all those years (Oops, Karma will get me now) and have very rarely lost a plate or bowl onto the cabin sole. We do not try to set a banquet table in rough seas but a single plate or bowl can be managed.

We also use normal porcelain coffee cups and have not broken many of these although we knock them over occasionally.

We also use nice glassware and crystal stemware. We break these frequently but carry a box of them. We do not use plastic for eating or drinking on this boat.

I can remember a few memorable meals eaten in the cockpit while crossing the south Indian Ocean in very heavy seas. It was hard to control a plate, silverware, and a wineglass full of red wine but we did it, and felt that even in those conditions we enjoyed fine dining; our style.

Re: adhesive grip pads for dishware

I prefer non-skid table mats. The pads will make the dishes more difficult to wash and perhaps take more water, which is a non-starter for me.

Re: adhesive grip pads for dishware

I like the non-skid matting that big box stores sell for shelf liner. It would work as shelf liner in earthquake areas, too, of course, but they work fine, like a tacky table cloth. Shake the crumbs out. Wash weekly if you're living aboard.

I use silicone placemats. Holds plates while at table and heeling; also good for galley prep or sitting something that's hot/stains

Re: adhesive grip pads for dishware

I used a hot glue gun and a stick of all-purpose glue to add 3 dots on the ring on the bottom of all my plates, bowls and cups. I've had a plate left on the salon table while healing at about 20º, and it stayed in place (the contents of the plate however were another story).

I heated up the glue gun, put three dabs of glue in place, then turned the dishes over and placed gently on a flat stainless steel countertop, so that the bottom side of the dots flattened out a bit (this won't stick to the stainless). As long as you hand wash your dishes, this will stay in place. I've accidentally had plates run through a dishwasher once, and even that didn't melt/unstick the glue.
