Many meatmarkets and supermarkets have become super-cautious after several c-coli contamination incidentss in recent years. The meat markets and supermarkets in Houston no longer will do special-request mincing or grinding. We used to be able to select a pot-roast or other cut and request that it be ground or minced in the larger ground mince for chili. They won't do this anymore citing that the grinding/mincing machine can be used only for specific cuts of meat because of fear of contaminating the machine. If they special grind now, the machine must be completely disassembled and cleaned with bleach before the regular grinding can recommence.

Makes me feel real safe that the pot roast or stew meat might contaminate the grinding machine but that the pot roast or stew meat s considered safe to sell to us in whole cut.

Re: Cost of Living Indicator for Cruisers.

Minced beef, even mixed up with pork (called "half om half") is a very popular part of the evening dish in Holland, but also in Germany.
Every butcher in Holland/Germany/Belgium and even France sell the minced meat. Never heard of e-coli. Point might be that staff does not clean up machinegrinder each day so that might cause reasons for trouble. Here, n' importe where, the butchers close early because of the daily cleaning. E-coli tends to come in unfresh meat.

I find life is happier not knowing too much about my food. Especially the food that I like!

Re: Cost of Living Indicator for Cruisers.

E-Coli only lives on the surface of meats and vegetables. You don't have to kill all of the E-Coli you just need to remove enough it so that your body can handle what is left. That is what we have an immune system is for.

My mother always ground her own "forced meat". She always washed all meats well with cold tap water before cutting it into chunks. This include fowl, fish, lamb, pork, beef, and buffalo. None of our family ever got sick from eating tainted food.

On the other hand, her root vegetables were washed peeled and washed again. The outer leafs of head vegetables were removed, washed, and patted dry. Leafy vegetable were washed in a bowl of cold water and then rinsed under the cold water tap.

Some authors have recommended that vegetable be initially dunked in cold water with a splash of bleach for about 5 minutes. I've done this and it doesn't hurt the taste of the vegetables at all.

Re: Cost of Living Indicator for Cruisers

The following are prices in St. Martin
1) 4 litres of diesel. $4.88
2) 4 litres petrol. $5.2
3) 4 litres milk.$2.7
4) A loaf of bread around 700 grams. $2.0
5) A kilo of minced beef. $0.43
6) A kilo of potatoes. 2.12
7) A dozen eggs. 1.0
The total is $25.85
Prices of groceries could be knocked down by about 10-15% if extensive search is done through the local stores and markets. The prices above are from a "western" supermarket

Re: Cost of Living Indicator for Cruisers

Having St. Martin being half Dutch and half French almost all products are imported from the US and France hence the similarities with "western" prices.
