Re: Could one substitute Vegemite?

Vegemite destroys brain cells, scientists say. This happens quite quickly. Proof is that they keep eating it after tasting the first bite.

Could one substitute Vegemite?

Eaten both Marmite and Vegemite over the years. Marmite has a stronger flavour. Vegemite is a bit bland. Like moving down to a Korma from a Vindaloo!

That is normally done at the table in our house but often use supermaket own brand yeast extract instead as it is less runny and way cheaper. vegemite only works upside down.

Re: Could one substitute Vegemite?

Melt some butter in a pot. Chuck in whole button mushrooms. Let them soak up some of the butter and add a tablespoon of marmite. Let the mushrooms soak in the marmite and butter for a few minutes till on the softer side and eat with blood red steak. YUM.

I have 3 jars in the cupboard right now. It is delicious. Only problem is that a standard jar of Marmite lasts about 3 months and the Peanut Butter version lasts about 3 days and then it is gone. Costs more for a jar as well!!!

Re: Could one substitute Vegemite?

Trouble is you Seppos use way too much.
An 8 ounce jar is enough to supply a family of 6 for 15 to 20 years. As a guide, you would use about 10% of the amount of butter you used.

Re: Could one substitute Vegemite?

Marmite? Vegemite? Don't you people have steak? I make my own beer and I can't imagine eating the trub from the bottom of one of my fermenters. Ewwww smells kind of nauseating. The finished beer of course is nectar of the gods, but the trub is revolting and should not be refined into any food product, IMHO. However I will concede that different people find different foods palatable. But every time I hear "Vegemite" mentioned it reminds me of this:

Re: Could one substitute Vegemite?

when I was in boarding school...we gave nicknames to all the teachers...one of them was called " Marmite"...could not say why...as this name was bestowed on him before I got there...we also had "Tammy"...short for tampax..then there was " Stretch"..."Black Harry"...."Doofus"..and some others....
"Marmite" was an elderly geezer...not sure how he got this nickname.......
