Vegemite is, of course, proven to keep drop bears away.

Unfortunately, it appears that only Australians will be thus protected and saved as all the rest of the world is unlikely to be able finish the prescribed course.

Re: Could one substitute Vegemite?

Mick, in SA we call those (prickly pear - directly translated from Afrikaans), Turks (Turkish?) Figs.
And they were the main fruit on the farm over Christmas time.
We had three different varieties - red, gold and white - the last being really really sweet.

Oh, and the plants were not planted for bearing fruit - it was actually emergency food ( the leaves) for the cattle during drought

But this is a digression....not nearly as divisive as the V or M topic.....

Re: Could one substitute Vegemite?

ok...one more.....ok ....several more...

when I was a youngster, living in Holland....my g'pa used to have me run to the corner, where some guy was selling pickled herring from a cart...they were called "Rollmops"...pickled herring...you can buy pickled herring here, but it's bottled...not quite the same thing...as standing on a street corner chowing down some pickled herring..

I have also spent some time in South Africa....by far and away my favorite SA cuisine is "biltong"....kinda like American jerky, but 1,000 times better...it's a cured meat....with some spices....it's not cooked...just air dried...you can't just eat one piece....once you get stuck into some biltong, you'll keep going until it's finished...practically every farmer there makes his or her own variety...after much experimentation, I have been able to make it here in the US, where it is a big hit with my friends.
talking about SA, another favorite....is the " meat pie"...these also come in a wide variety....

I learned about marmite in SA. It's an "acquired taste" for sure, but have grown to love it.

Re: Could one substitute Vegemite?

Try a teaspoon of Vegemite, eat very slowly, licking it gently, leave the spoon.
Marmite is an inferior Vegemite substitute, much too runny.

Re: Could one substitute Vegemite?

I've tried my damnest to make meat pies ala Australia/South Africa.....have researched countless dough and filings, recipes, etc.....I can make pies....but.....????
Making the right dough mix is the big ticket...it has to be folded a gazillion times to get that crusty texture...I've lost track of the Youtube "how to"video's I've watched, I am at a loss to explain why this simple but delicious to eat pie is beyond my ability to replicate...

The perfect meat pie has that soft pliable dough...soft and crusty....

My pies end like up something the coal miners in England used to take into the mines....could be used as a chisel...

maybe if I added marmite to the dough....there must be some "secret" not being divulged......is about all I can think of...

Anyone here to divulge the perfect meat pie recipe, would earn my undying gratitude..

You guys are funny. Steak and kidney pie, Melton Mowbray, Cornish pasty - those are iconic and entirely English. Sorry to break the news to you but the vast repertoire of Australian "cuisine" (as well as that from the little speck to the left) has been ripped off, sadly mostly from the Pommies. The only truly iconic foodstuff out of the Antipodes is putting beetroot on burgers.
