Woolworths and Coles are the two big supermarket chains in Australia with about 70% of the market between them. (Between them, they also have 80% of the entire retail food market)

Re: Could one substitute Vegemite?

There were four different companies on four different continents trading as Woolworths.
The UK one was part of US Woolworths....
In 1924 an Australian company started using the name and then in the 1930s a South African outfit also started using it. They had no financial connection with the US/UK business or each other.

So... there were three different Woolworths.... two are still going strong... the Australian and the South African ones.....
The South African group has interests in Australia ...David Jones being one....
The Australians trade in New Zealand as Countdown....

A bit like Lloyds in the shipping and insurance businesses...

Where you need to get out more too... from wiki
[edit]
Woolworths Group is the largest retail corporation in Australia, operating a variety of supermarket and other retail chains in Australia and New Zealand. The name "Woolworths" was legally taken to capitalize on the F.W. Woolworth name since they did not do business in Australia, and had not registered the trademark there, but is in no other way connected to the U.S. or U.K. Woolworths.[39]
Woolworths is an upmarket retail chain in South Africa selling goods of a comparable nature to Marks & Spencer stores in the United Kingdom. The South African company also operates stores in Bahrain, Botswana, Ghana, Kenya, Lesotho, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Oman, Qatar, Swaziland, Tanzania, Uganda, United Arab Emirates, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.[40]
Woolworth's on Prince William-Henry Street in Bridgetown, Barbados operates independently, having split from the British branch in 1982.[41] It was established in the 1950s, stocking goods shipped from Britain.'

Maybe it WAS a unique offshore experience, but I haven't forgotten it. So there.

Have you gotten those teenagers-in-hammocks sorted out yet...?

LittleWing

Now I'm going off to sing a round of the Happy Little Vegemite song...

You may not have forgotten the experience, but the question remains unanswered....

Have you actually eaten the same concoction at home while warm and dry?

No, I didn’t think so, and with that, you honour, the prosecution rests.

As for the foredeck infestation, I was able to eliminate it by sailing to a part of the world where the locals think 20 degrees C is a lovely warm day and it isn’t actually considered to be raining until the water comes in over the top of your gumboots.

Re: Could one substitute Vegemite?

Vegemite and cheese sandwiches were considered a standard school lunch when I was of that age.

Re: Could one substitute Vegemite?

I found a far better use for leftover brewing yeast than making veg/mar mite whilst living in the bush. If you pour it in the long drop it works as a very good odour suppressant for a few days..
Maybe a completely useless snippet of information but at least its not as harmful as some I've seen.

Yep - I am SO busted!

I may have eaten vegemite-and-ceddar sandies on warm and cozy dry land - but I don't remember, which doesn't count. So you have won your case, Counsellor!

I'm so sorry to hear that you've lost the teenagers. I was looking forward to a few more hilarious stories involving their strange antics...

I still maintain that you just need to park your yacht next to some big F-O luxe motor vessel and let them flirt with the (requisite) handsome deckhands... O would you have some stories then!

I abjectly apologize for my remarks Wottie-ward and publicly and freely declare that Wottie is King of the Sea - and Vintage Yanmar Owners.

Now can I be President of his Fan Club??? (Despite his unaccounable preference for orange cheddar "cheese food"...)

Interesting.

That is exactly what I would do with the left over brewers yeast. Pour it down the drain which goes to the septic tank.

Now, I cannot say it made the septic tank smell better, since I surely did not open said tank and take a sniff. But it seemed the best use for the brown goo at the time.

Having now earned that I could "concentrate" the brown goo, put it in a bottle, sell it for "food" and make millions, if not billions, I am rethinking my previous method of disposal. Maybe I should copyright "Browns Artisanal Reduced Food", get used yeast from local brew pubs, buy some bottles,...

Might be able to buy a boat from the proceeds....

Dan

Vegemite forEVAH,

LitteWing, don’t feel badly. I am keeping up the side .
I grew up smeared in vegemite so I have wolfed down the culinary delight of Vegemite and cheese sangies on dry land countless times.

I start to get palpitations and even hallucinate when supplies on board risk getting low .
