Vegemite and cheese on toast with a cup of coffee are a common breakfast for me. As is vegemite and cheese sannich for lunch.

(This morning it was just vegemite on toast, no cheese)

Re: Could one substitute Vegemite?

I know the Aussies call marmite..... vegemite.....but I could not say why....or if there is even any noticeable difference..

also grew up with Bovril....much like marmite...I believe marmite is veggie only whereas Bovril had some beef extract...

I'm no expect on the matter.....but it's good stuff...

Vegemite and Marmite are totally different.. Same source but it's like saying crude oil is like aviation fuel.. one is thick and gross, the other more viscous and volatile..
Never took to Bovril, not keen on the flavor..

Despite sailing and teaching in the Solent (Southern UK waters), I never did develop a taste for Marmite (sorry, Boatie). Had no idea it was the off-product of beer brewing. See what one learns courtesy of this Forum?!?

Like a good Canadian (and Irish descendant), I do love a good craft beer - so it's wild I never much liked Marmite.

No hallucinations when the onboard Vegemite supply runs low, however, as I eat it only occasionally. Not considered a staple as yet... Maybe I'm not yet a fully evolved sailor!

Re: Could one substitute Vegemite?

you can get marmite in the USA now...it's not widely known or appreciated here, but a small container usually finds it way to my table..

just like "ENO's"....don't see it in stores here, but available online....best hangover cure ever made...

You beat me to it!
I was going to say it's only saving grace is that it can be pressed into service, should you be able to suppress the barf reflex, as hangover relief.
Debatable which is worse, trying to get the remains of a tablespoon of Mar/Vegemite out of yr mouth or a concussion type hangover

I try to make sure I dont run out of Berocca.

OMG! A TABLESPOON!!!!

Even old Vegemite die-hards only go up to a teaspoon. Otherwise Vegemite is barely smeared on buttered toast just enough to colour the butter.

Tom Hanks never lived it down tweeting a photo of his Vegemite on toast one morning while quarantining in Australia. He was almost repatriated following that faux pas. It was touch and go.

Dunno anyone who does Marmite by the table spoon or by the teaspoon come to that..
Toast on butter with a smear of Marmite for that added Zing..
Fernabranca is the serious drinkers hangover cure..

Re: Could one substitute Vegemite?

so as to make a non-Oz-non-UK voice heard here on this subject:
Vegemite & Marmite (& all other "Yeast extracts") are totally abhorrent, revolting & gut-wrenching to all other nationalities' palates. Neither Krauts nor Frogs (nor, I'm sure spaniards, Italians, Russians,...) would consider it edible!
The only explanation for it's existence that we can think of is to prepare children for "UK-cuisine".
No offence intended, but I had to let you know. If it was invented by a Kraut the reason was probably to prepare "The isle" for Nazi occupation...

The Krauts have Vitam-R. And Brazilians have Cenovit. There are probably others.

Re: Could one substitute Vegemite?

I wish I had a camera rolling each time I have had a foreign visitor/friend ask to try some vegemite. Smearing it on thick is only for the hardened, but they still do and the look on their face is always classic. Meanwhile, I am chomping down a tablespoon of it and my kids (were young back then) have it smeared on thick on their toast and munching away. Vegemite/cheese toasties are great cool morning breakfasts.
