Re: Could one substitute Vegemite?

All this talk about Sao biscuits reminds me of another Aussie product that had a big influence upon our earlier cruising provisioning: Arnotts Cabin Biscuits! A truly ubiquitous and very useful bread substitute, available all over the Pacific islands. They came in a big tin container... IIRC 5 lbs contents... and were about three inches square, quite firm, slightly salty and to me, quite tasty. Even after opening the tin (which was resealable) they lasted forever, never seeming to change in flavour. And when you reached the bottom of the tin, the tin itself was an absolutely water tight container for stuff on board. Folks in the islands used them for storage of essential items in their often leaky bures or palapas, and to make stoves and heaps of other clever adaptations.

I haven't seen them for some time now, but then, we've not been shopping in village stores on remote islands much, either!

Never tried Vegemite on them, but Anchor canned butter was good...

Arnotts themselves call them 'savoury biscuits' that can be used as cheese or dip crackers...

Normally, yes. But he left it too late this year. The compass froze solid and he couldn't figure out which was was North.

I'm heading his way with a blow torch to thaw him out.

Re: Could one substitute Vegemite?

...delving a little into all the deep psychological factors behind this inexplicable "lucullian" preferences of the Anglo-saxons...:
this is a kind of "Stockholm-syndrome": to breed the proverbial "stiff upper lip" into their offspring Anglo-Saxon parents torture their kids with Vege/Marmite, & the poor kinds, as they cannot very well hate their parents - have to start to like V/Mmite. To always remember the suffering of the poor "mites", the products are named V/M-"mite".

Oooooh! I don't recall every coming across "lucullian/lucullan" before. ("lucullan" appears to be the more common spelling) Thank you for adding to my vocabulary

The compass froze solid because they used the alcohol from it as a 'blood thinner' .. aka antifreeze.. last winter ..

They then tried to replace it with Boags.... that was never going to work....

Cue Monty Python / Canadian beer / canoe relationship...

Am I the only one who sees the relationship between Boags and 'bogan'....

Or is that just a North Hobart thing??
