Re: Could one substitute Vegemite?

I can't believe that people on this forum could talk negatively of either Vegemite or Marmite. It's not one versus the other. You simply don't have toast in the morning without one or the other. To argue with that simple truth is like saying you don't have a glass of red wine before breakfast.

Am I the only one who sees the relationship between Boags and 'bogan'....

Or is that just a North Hobart thing??

Geez mate, don’t dis the Boags down here, they’ll lynch you.

I made the mistake of ordering a Coopers with lunch the other day and immediately got asked to leave the marina.

Thanks for clearing up how Jim and Ann survived the winter. I’m heading out to the cockpit now to see how much a Plastimo binnacle compass holds.

Uh, it's American beer/canoe relationship. Canadian beer tastes like frozen moose-piss, but at least has alcohol in it.

For those who don't understand the reference, the question is "why is American beer similar to having sex in a canoe?"

Ok. Against my better judgement, why?

America is known for many marvels we take for granted today....alas...knowing how to make beer is not on that list...

Of course, quite a few years ago now, a very famous Canadian defined a Canadian as "someone who can have sex in a canoe" [without tipping over].

Have **no idea** how the Aussies twisted that one!

That used to be true but there are now gazzilions of little breweries all over the country that are making great beer. I used to make my own beer since the choice in our rural grocery stores was limited. However, nowadays, the store does stock a much better selection of good beer, not just the p...ss water big brands, but many local and national breweries that make good beer.

We even have a beer store in town, which I was afraid would go out of business, especially with the lock down, but he has thrived and is opening a brewery as well.

If we lived in The Big City there would be an even better beer selection. One of the grocery stores has two long aisles full of beer. The selection is amazing. I try to make it simple when I go there to only buy beer in either cans or bottles. One or the other, to make it easier to pick a beer by reducing the search space. Or two. Or three.

The WORST place I have ever been for beer quality and selection is Ireland. Horrible. Makes the US from 20-30 years ago look like Beer Paradise. Tis great if you want Guinness, Murphy's, Beemish, or Carlsberg, which I do like, and these brands were sold all over the place but that was that. Shockingly, I did see Bud being sold.

The Irish stores seemed to have a better selection of ciders. We have been to quite a few Irish grocery stores, some big, and some small, in Dublin and out in the rural areas. The store size did not have much difference on beer selection. I do wonder if the lack of selection was tax related and/or limited beer distributor/companies.

I don't think we saw Vegemite, or a derivative there of, but why would I have looked?

Dan

Exactly, I am waiting to see how the People Down Under flip this around. It takes a bit of skill to perform this act in a canoe and have the canoe stay right side up.

Re: Could one substitute Vegemite?

True...American stores now have beer aisles that stretch from one end to the other...
many colorful names...colors....blends...etc...etc..but still crap...

I have some friends that make beer in a shack. They have the place kitted out with all sorts of stills, machines, hoses, tanks and other beer making devices....

They " import" the ingredients for their beer from who knows where...then they refer to to their " secret" recipe book, wherein they have jotted down past beers, recipes, mistakes they made, etc...and then they set forth to make their brew. It is a veritable science project.

Typically, they will make 2-3 different types. It takes them some doing and some time.
Then they'll have their " unveiling" . Select friends, with known beer expertise are invited to sample their wares. On occasions, I get invited.

Let me tell you, that is beer....they make beer perfection. Once you've had one of their brews, no store bought product is even remotely equal.

Commercially available beer is concocted with a profit in mind, so the selection of ingredients they use is compromised.
