I also hate plastic bottles, and refuse to buy them unless absolutely HAVE to.

When filling up the water tank from the dock, try to ask for the filter. Most of the times the water supplied is clean, but other times it is not from the sources due to the distance from the mountain and the central hoses - ask for the filter if possible.

I run it through a 1micron filter. Should have it all up and running from today onwards. I'm going across Atlantic & Pacific so need to have a source of water!

If you are going to do that much sailing you need a watermaker - We are in Turkey also and I can not remember when we last had rain - can rain catchers help? - yep but if you want a steady source get a watermaker.

Re: Greece - weekly cruising costs

I do think about a water maker from time to time.
We have had enough rain to fill tanks = 1000 litres. About 3 days of heavy rain over a 5 day period. Certainly more rain than I can remember in Turkey for June. This was about 10 days ago in English Harbour & Tuzla Koya.

We can make our water last up to 2 months. The test will come when in Caribbean to see how much rain there is there. From what I've read quite a bit. The same also for Pacific. When I've been in Tonga (not with a boat) its rained for a time nearly everyday and I gather this is quite normal in south pacific.

My concerns with water maker are Cost, Power consumption and various threads I've seen where some people have had endless issues with them, while some have had no issues.
Currently all my power is supplied by solar panels, so I never run the engine for batteries.
On the pro side for a water maker is you can't live without water!

Thanks for your reply

I see no reason for a watermaker in the Med as you are always short distance from drinkable water supply. We drink the tank water as standard procedurev (after purification & filtration).
It will be very helpful to have a WM during ocean crossing (although I did manage to cross the Atlantic and half of Pacific) without one. It is highly inconvenient but doable.

We have been in the Med since 2013. We used our watermaker in the Greek islands. Those folks are water short so why should I fill my 50 gal tank and take some of their valuable water when I can make my own? It is just the right thing to do. And we have give water to other boats. Why not?

Sure thing. However, they do sell the water to boats in Greek islands as part of catering to the yachting community. The price is high enough (€5-10 per 1,000 ltr) to make it good business for the sellers.
It is not the case that yachts keep the islands in draught.
When water was really short, they politely told us that supply is unavailable (e.g. dry island and tanker boat did not arrive). We filled water at the next available point.
