We bought a boat that had been on the hard for 12 years. Engine started on the second crank and ran fine on the fuel in the tank. I stocked up on filters and motored away. Smoked a bit more then with clean fuel but otherwise no ill effects. That’s with a Yanmar YSM 12 which is about the simplest most bomb proof engine made though.
