Manual Can Opener - Recommendations ?

I cannot find a good manual can opener. Even the big-name brands give up after about 3 months. Everyone I know on land is using electric can openers these days, but as a liveaboard, I need a good manual can opener. Anyone have a recommended model?

Re: Manual can opener recommendations?

Just grab a handful of the dollar-store specials .... slather all but one ( the one in use ) with vaseline & put them in a ziplok bag until you need a new can opener ..... repeat ad infinitum

2 Military can opener p 51 p 38 army canopener p51 p38 | eBay

We used these in the British army and seems the American army too. Only can opener I could ever get the hang of as a left hander.

Re: Manual can opener recommendations?

I hate cheap can openers.

This what we use at home.

As I sail OPBs, I do not get much choice. I have been tempted to bring one of my own.

I use one that cuts the whole lid off. It leave a very sharp edge so people with children need to be careful.

I used to have 17 kids...

Can opener is operated horozontally not verticaly.

Ah good choice. Brought to you by the makers of the original Swiss Army knife.

I use the can opener on one of these:

ZWN-307 - German Four Piece Utensil Set Fork Spoon Knife Can Opener

+1
I bought one like this from IKEA, in 1993. It just started "crapping out" a couple of months ago.

Re: Manual can opener recommendations?

Those side cutting ones work great. But I like to drain most canned stuff by using the lid to press down on the contents (tuna, salmon, beans, etc..) and the side-cut lid just won't do the job since it doesn't fit back down into the can.

Stainless is the key, whatever style you choose.

Ooof! Victorinox.

Been wondering what to get Wonderblond for her birthday.

You get your babe a $16 can opener, they can't call you cheap, right?

As long as you don't let her see the $40 ones

Re: Manual can opener recommendations?

Argh!! can openers !!

I spent many hours researching this and two winners came up:

1. Fissler Magic can opener (kinda like MarkJ posted)
This one is very different from the rest and works flawless forever (like all Fissler products... expensive but superb) There is no comparison with this can opener!
Amazon.com: Magic 1.58" H x 2.65" W x 9.25" D Smooth-Edge Can Opener: Kitchen & Dining

2. OXO Steel can opener (like posted by Jackdale)
I bought this one as backup but never needed it yet. The user reviews praise this one almost as much as the Fissler!
Amazon.com: SteeL Can Opener: Kitchen & Dining

ciao!
Nick.

Re: Manual can opener recommendations?

Been using this on the boat for several years. Never rusts, never lets me down, never leave a sharp edge.

Re: Manual can opener recommendations?

We're using one of these on the boat and so far it's been good ...Amazon.com: KitchenAid Can Opener, Red: Kitchen & Dining

We use to have one of the horizontal ones like MarkJ mentions, and although it worked great I never understood why you'd want a sharp edge like it leaves. Maybe there's advantage I not seeing?
