They get us addicted young in Australia. When Mum was both pregnant and breastfeeding a teaspoon a day was recommended, and my first rusk was smeared generously with Vegemite. What hope do we poor kids have?

Yeast??? Malt??? Hmmm... maybe there is something useful to do with this stuff after all! Who knew?

Well, the ever indispensable Google did reveal that Scottish prisoners use it, rotting fruit and a bit of water to make a "special brew". Have to admit, that does sound rather special!

Re: Neverending Marmite

There was a cooking segment on the news here in nz a while back where they compared various marmite recipes from books and had a tv chef make his version, public taste tests had his version as being indistinguishable from the commercial product
It was from memory yeast flakes, salt and colouring blitzed together

I'll see if I can find the quantities

Not sure why it would start ferment in the jar as there is no food source for the yeast?

That's exactly what I thought, which is why I tried googling it, and couldn't find anything. Therefore I presume it can't happen.

I considered it might have been an April Fool's trick I discovered a bit late, but no kidding, when I opened the jar it literally started oozing out over the edges, and awesome as our crew are, I simply don't see how they could have made that happen...
