Nozzle for water catcher

I would like to build a water catcher, made from sunbrella for my sailboat, but I am having trouble finding the right kind of fitting that will allow me to attach a hose and drain off the collected water. I figured that Sailrite would have one, but no.

Any ideas?

Thanks

A small barbed thru-hull fitting.

I would probably reinforce the fabric by gluing 1 or 2 additional layers with polyurethane adhesive first. It won;t rear out or wick through the fabric this way.

Re: Nozzle for water catcher

Can you adapt a funnel to do the job? I'm thinking of the large bore funnel I have that has a cylindrical section that could be used to attach to the cloth with a hose clamp. Mine's like this one:

Then hose clamp a garden hoseon the spout.

Why Sunbrella? Why not coated nylon?

Re: Nozzle for water catcher

Place a piece of PVC pipe inside the drainage point of the sunbrella water catcher. Then connect whatever you want to that.

Sew an extra piece of cloth into the bottom of your water catcher that will form a fabric cylinder (think lifeline cushion cover) that will hang down 4 inches where you want the water to drain out. Put the piece of PVC pipe in there, and then hose clamp your drainage hose to that. The hose clamp will go over the fabric and PVC making a water tight-ish seal.

Next time you go to some pack and ship place that puts peanuts into boxes, look at what they have hanging from the ceiling. This is what I'm talking about emulating.

Something like this:

Good luck!

Any thruhull fitting should work. Just need a little reinforcement so it doesn't pull through. Doesn't need to be very big.

A standard nylon thruhull fitting, 1" should be sufficient.
Cut a round hole in the fabric, just enough to insert the fitting, and screw on the nut on the other side and attach a hose, insert that hose into your water intake on deck and viola.

That's a nice design, Boatyarddog.

Funny!
I can make it much more complicated.
I'm just super lazy today.

Re: Nozzle for water catcher

We shaped "gutters" in the edges of our 12x13 awning then sewed a Sunbrella funnel we made into a 8 inch round hole, and put a standard nylon through hull fitting.

In this photo you can see the funnel and fitting, but the hose is not attached.

The rope coming down is to limit the billowing of the large awning in the wind.

Two inches of rain with this system up can collect 140 gallons of clean fresh water.

Re: Nozzle for water catcher

I'm just making a small catcher. Heavy duty tarp ( proved not to taint water ). 25mm plastic skin fitting ,hose clamp on food grade hose. Clamp also traps a small line to tie down outlet. Simples !

Re: Nozzle for water catcher

These are the fittings we use in water collection tarps:

Note they are almost flush and fit into the tarp material like a sink drain.

When looking these up I also noticed some ready made water catchment tarps that appear to be very well made. [I will consider one of these next time we need a new one.]

BTW, I would reconsider using Sunbrella as it is not as easy to keep clean and needs waterproofing over time. [e.g., chemicals I would rather not have in my water supply...]

In case any of this is helpful.

Cheers! Bill

Re: Nozzle for water catcher

Ah, of course. That’s a great idea. I will see a reinforcing patch wher I want the nozzle.

Thanks,

Re: Nozzle for water catcher

@jalmberg,

When we made ours, the first one had a 12 mm skin fitting with barbs (it was nylon, iirc), with the fabric tripled, but patches are dead simple to sew on. But the 2nd one, I simply sewed in a cone, and sewed string onto the cone to tie tightly around the hose. It was adequate to not leak and hold the hose in place. We also found, like wingssail, that the water catcher/awning benefits from a tie down of some sorts, or you lose water in gusts. In our case, the 18 mm hose was heavy enough to do the job most of the time. Ours was of a trapezoidal shape, so that in the down (water catching) position, all the sides went down to the drain. We used the boom topping lift for the uphaul (sun) mode. Eventually added mosquito netting (panels attached by velcro) so one could sit out, bug free, in the evenings. Use pyrethrins to treat the netting material. Treatment lasts all summer. Store in bag separate from water catcher.

Enjoy.

Ann

Same idea but I used a plastic 1" sink waste fitting and 1" hose.

Use a small plastic through-hull fitting.
