Origo 6000

Hi all,

I have to replace a CNG stove/oven and I'd really prefer and alcohol stove like the Origo 6000, unfortunately they are discontinued. Does anyone know if there is another option out there?

Alcohol stoves gained a very bad reputation, which is why you can't find them. You might want to think about this again.

Re: Origo 6000

I used a Origo for a number of years, different deal than normal old pressurized alcohol. Easy, safe, produces a lot of heat. Got some spare canisters if you find an old stove.

For all the proponents of Alcohol and the price they were sold for, I'm surprised the discontinued them. Shame.

Re: Origo 6000

Pressure alcohol stoves had a bad reputation. They didn't put out a lot of heat and leaving a burner on accidentally could result in flooding the stove with alcohol. If that alcohol caught on fire would have a hard time seeing the flames in the daytime and leaking valve would continue to feed the fire.

Origo stoves were not pressure alcohol and dead simple. Basically a pot with glass wool that you filled with alcohol and lit. It had temp. control by restricting oxygen via a flap and put out more Btu's than a pressure alcohol stove with almost no chance of runaway fires.

Believe Origo was bought by Dometic who closed them down. Seemed like a really stupid move as the Origo stoves were about the only viable alternate to propane/butane. Dometic may have sold the stove rights to another company but they have shown no inclination to reintroduce the marine stove line.

You might start canvassing marine consignment stores, I saw one at Bacons in Annapolis MD a year or so ago.
We use a 23 year old gimbaled Origo 4000 on our Bristol, it was original equipment, works great, it does suck that Dometic bought the brand and then shut it down.

Fair winds,

Re: Origo 6000

Laskadog have you looked at the used route?

We bought ours for $400 cad and it was hardly used.

They’re very good, simple, and robust stoves.

Re: Origo 6000

Yes, lots of them available used on ebay.
I have a saved search setup and get an email about every other day about a new one posted.

Take a look there for a used one. I think that the "bad rep" that the pressurized alcohol stoves carried over to the Origo's and the prices have keep reasonably low despite them being discontinued.

Re: Origo 6000

I should be so lucky as to find one for $400. So far the only Origo 6000 I found was $1,600! By a stroke of luck, I did fall upon a Origo 3000 in the local classified for $15!!! That will do the job until I can find a 6000.

Re: Origo 6000

15$?! Haha nice. A 6000 will come around...

Yeah, I can see their rep being hurt just for being “alcohol”. Even though there’s no pressure with the origos.

I had one of those older Coleman alcohol pressure stoves...pinhole fuel weep and that thing lit up! Left a nice mark on the picnic table.

Up to that incident it worked really well though ^

Re: Origo 6000

Just FYI, there's an Origo 6000 for sale on eBay. Unfortunately, they don't ship to Canada so I can't buy it
Normally I just have stuff shipped to Plattsburgh NY and go get it, but I can't because of the pandemic. Anyways, snap it up before it goes!
