I have yet to try ABC rum but the stuff we put in it is La Cana Grande silver witch is around $4.50 more for a 1.75 and tasted a bit like lighter fluid when we first bought it. Ill have to give it a try with the ABC stuff next though. Maybe ill just leave it in longer? The current batch has been sitting for around 4 weeks or so, and its made a world of difference.

Hansolo was ment to be a play on words from hans christian and solo.. Though I do like the movies as well.

The first I heard of the "Minister of Rum" was in Ann Vanderhoof's book, An Embarrassment of Mangoes

Here's a link to the Minister of Rum's chapter in her book: An Embarrassment of Mangoes: A Caribbean Interlude - Ann Vanderhoof - Google Books

(btw, how the heck do you multi-quote? I selected the quote from the two posts I wanted but...)

He brought samples of all kinds of Carribean Rums including Cubans. A good time was had by all.

Sondor's link is perfect... that's the deal....

That sounds fun.

But when you wrote it I had a vision of some government official showing up and taxing any rum you have brought in with you from somewhere else.

Some places may try and do that, depending on their Customs regulations (or what they think they can get by with), but typically its treated as "ship's stores".

Yeah, I found my favorite Brugal on the shelf in one little spot in Florida too.
I guess the "Third world" is the only place you can find this stuff.!

Taste preferences are very subjective of course, but its unusual to hear Flor de Caña called "disgusting". What age was it?

Re: Rum

Picked up a small bottle of Brugal extra viejo the other day. Decent, but not as smooth as the 8 year old Barbancourt leftover from Haiti. Fortunately, here I can buy rum in small bottles to try before purchasing a full size bottle. Vizcaya was a favorite in the States, imported from the Dominican republic, but I haven't seen it here yet. My other current favorites are Angostura from Trinidad and Demararra from Guyana.

I'm a big fan of Kirk and Sweenys, which is easy to pick up here in the states. We have a fair number of other tasty ones behind the bar.

And I absolutely love Sebastian's from apple bay, Tortola. Some one else makes it for them and, I think, adds some flavors. But it is damn tasty... kind of has a bazooka gum flavor to it.

For a half gallon bottle of Brugal Extra Viejo, we paid $7 in the DR Make no mistake, they needed a truck to bring provisions to the dinghy dock for us

Re: Rum

Working on a plan to make several gallons on Dominican republics finest disappear into the boat somewhere before heading north for the summer. price and availability in the north is not good! Still testing different rums to see which one I would enjoy for the next 6 months.

There is no such thing as bad sex or bad rums, only some is better than others.
