Re: What is going on with alcohol cookers?

I gave up on my Princess pressure alky stove. Not so much that it wouldn,'t maintain pressure; but that fuel was running well North of $17.00/ gallon.
The little bit of use the stove gets, I stick with a Coleman slim line camper and keep it discon'd when not in use and the gas bottles in proper stowage in the 'pit.

Any fuel that contains more than 4.4% water will gradually accumulate water in the canister and performance will drop. At that point, the cure is to run it dry and then bake out the water in a low oven over 4-6 hours.

I think this is really the root of it. Boats being manufactured today for a higher-end market are using propane or electric because it's more familiar to a general audience and arguably easier to use once it's already installed, and they look sleeker. The audience that wants an alcohol stove also probably has a smaller, older boat and is far more resourceful with their spending and probably thinking more about all those intricacies, like the safety aspects of storing propane. I got a used Dometic Origo for my boat because there is simply no good spot to store propane, because it's an older, smaller boat, not a new luxury yacht. And the fact that they last forever certainly doesn't help to create demand. And I think that the reason they can be so hard to track down online might be partially because of the growing trend of road tripping and living in camper vans, which really started almost right after they stopped making them, so they bought up a lot of those used ones. I also think Dometic profits a lot more off their other appliances, like fridges and electric coolers and heat and A/C units, so it's probably just not worth it to them to keep making a handful of alcohol stoves for a very small and shrinking market. I honestly think the best way to find one, besides going to a marine salvage store, might be to go to some marinas and ask if you can dig around in the abandoned boats. Odds are high that some of the ones that have been on the hard for 20 years have a perfectly functional alcohol stove inside just waiting for a second life.

Link to stove...

As I said before, some boat manufactures are still installing brand new Alcohol stoves in new boats. They are expensive, but still being manufactured by Kenyon.
Of course there are many manufactures of non-marine alcohol stoves for camping... such as this.. (easy to put a S.S. box around it)

And you can make your own stove... Zen and the Art of the Alcohol Stove

Re: What is going on with alcohol cookers?

I would think it is caused by CA that banning all alcohol sales for cooking. As CA goes everyone follows. I can see why someone would stop making the stove that you cant buy fuel for.
One good place to get it, would be racing fuel supplies. I think it would be in 5 gallon cans. As soon as some suppliers like west marine run out of of alcohol they are not going to sale it anymore.

I doubt CA has anything to do with it. It's a big world.

If you get a larger inverter you can cook on a two burner induction stove.
Batter up grade also.

Pure grain alcohol is ethanol and also known of as stove fuel and or alcohol paint thinner.

The difference is most stove fuel has a bit of methanol added to it to make it poisonous to drink .
