Pushups and chinups are tried and proven. And also important, anyone on the water should be able to pull themselves up with a rope, or one hand on a railing. If you can't do it, do whatever excercises you need to until you can.

Re: Stronger Arms for Women

i donot understand why folks think rowing proprly or kayaking at speed is not a strengthener--LOL..... try doing your rowing properly ,using all the body and arms. try kayaking using entire arms--- makes speed happen--i donot lolligag at rowing , walking , bicycling or kayaking--i am strong ---- mebbe the folks panning the activities need to learn how to do it right--like the exercises in a gym--not done right they will hurt more than help.

Not saying it does nothing- great for endurance, but you're limited in how much bulk you can build, because once the kayak is moving, the level of resistance drops off. The OP mentioned strength, which I take to mean raw power rather than endurance.

Agreed- technique is far more important than how much weight you actually lift. That's why weight rooms have mirrors- to check your technique.

Re: Stronger Arms for Women

I find that rowing and hauling on sheets, cranking winches and pulling anchor chain to provide an excellent fitness routine. Far superior to my winter routine of lifting mugs of beer

Re: Stronger Arms for Women

I use "Thera-Band" resistance bands for a workout - sometimes wrapped around the mast - in addition to winch grinding and other activities of daily liveaboard living. The T-bands target specific muscles, are lightweight and easy to store, and don't rust ...
